Cell model uses materials
not often seen in most
projects
Functions of all
organelles are correctly

Cell model clearly
represents either
an animal or a
plant cell

I Got It
8-10 organelles are
correctly located and
labeled on the model
Good, creative use of
materials that are often
used by other students
Functions of all
organelles are correctly
summarized
Cell model
represents a plant
or animal cell

I am beginning
to get it
5-7 organelles are
correctly located and
labeled on the model
Minimal creativity is used;
project might be a poster
or other 2-D model
Functions of some
organelles are
summarized with
minor errors
Model is a replica
or a generalized
cell

<5 organelles are labeled
OR there are errors with
organelles identified
Lacks Creativity; Looks
copied from a diagram or

Name:_______________________Cell Model Proficiency Scale______________Per______
Goal: To accurately design a PLANT or ANIMAL cell model identifying each part of the cell, along with an accurate description of
the functions of each part.
Requirements:







Design and build a 3-D cell model (PLANT OR ANIMAL).
Use common household materials. Be creative with choices of colors, shapes, materials…
No food items, unless dry pasta, beans or hard candy but can only use one type for one part then can no longer be used.
Try NOT buy materials.
Correctly label/identify all organelles (including a key or legend is acceptable). Must be attached to design.
Relative sizes of cell parts should be close to correct.
Provide a written description that correctly describes the function/role of each cell part included in model.
Cell type and cell parts should be easily identifiable.
o Model must be transported by student from home to school (keep size appropriate , total design can be no bigger than 2ft
X 2ft in size.)
 Use Proficiency Scale on back as a guide.
 Get TWO peers to use Scale to assess your model.
 Turn in model to teacher on due date for teacher assessment.





Organelles that may be included in your cell:
cell wall
cell membrane
nucleus
smooth ER
ribosomes
Golgi bodies
vacuoles
nuclear membrane
cytoplasm
rough ER
mitochondria
nucleolus
chromosomes
lysosomes
microtubules
nucleoplasm
chloroplasts
**Note: Some of these organelles are found only in a plant or animal cell. Be sure you know which organelle you will need in
your model.
NOTE: Teacher score will count as an assessment.
