Brandon Pappu Background Report 9/22/2013 Period: 2 Brandon Pappu September 22, 2013 Period:2 Background Paper My science fair project is on seeing if neodymium magnets can make a simple motor. I will also see if stronger magnets affect the outcome of my project. My hypothesis is that the stronger set of magnets will make the motor work. I think that because I have heard that the stronger the force, the more magnetic force there will be. Also the reason why I think that the regular magnets will not work is because they are to weak magnets cannot create or make a simple motor. The outcome of this project is the magnets will make a simple motor. For this project I will need 1 C battery, neodymium magnet, copper wire and screw. My project will take about 1 to 5 days to do. The motor gets the energy / power from the battery. Then the copper wire transfers the energy from the battery to the magnets. Then that causes the motor. The magnets force is called the Lorentz force. The neodymium magnet is so strong it holds the battery and the magnet. The bigger / higher the voltage the longer and faster the motor will work. For example if I used an AAA battery. That battery will make the motor move a lot slower, and will also move a whole lot slower than the C battery I will be using. The C size battery will make the motor spin much more faster, and it will also last a whole lot longer than the AAA battery. The neodymium magnet is a really strong magnet. The reason why I am using the neodymium magnet instead of a magnet that you hold papers on your fridge with is, because in order for this project to work you need a set of some really strong magnets like the neodymium magnets I will be using. The real name for the motor I will be creating is called a Homopolar motor. But it is the same thing as simple motor neodymium magnets. A man named Michael Faraday had showed that the simple motor made up of the neodymium magnets and the battery with the cooper wire. But he was not the man who had introduced/showed how the Homopolar motor works. DVD players also have Homopolar motors inside of them because they have the strong magnetic fields My Background Report Brandon Pappu September 22, 2013 Period:2 Background Paper that a Homopolar has. Plus the magnetic field is so strong it creates a motor. A Homopolar motor! Do you know what a Homopolar motor is? Well a Homopolar motor is just a motor that is made up of strong magnets. The strong magnetic field pulls it so hard and strong it creates a simple motor. The Homopolar motor was made by a Frenchman in 1820. The name Homopolar Motor really means electrical polarity. Then, the Homopolar motor was further developed by a British scientist. The Homopolar motor is the simplest motor that had been made. It is so simple because all it uses to power itself is a battery and a set of neodymium magnets. Homopolar motors are in everyday things that we use. For example cars, toys, computers, speakers, and even our phones! So without a Homopolar motor there would not be the phones we all have today. The speed of the Homopolar motor depends on the type of battery. It will depend on the type of battery because the battery holds all of the energy that the Homopolar motor will have. The speed is affected by the energy from the battery and the force of the neodymium magnets. The refrigerator magnets I will be using to compare witch set of magnets work and what does not work, are going to be simple magnets. They will be the magnets that are used to hold up papers on a white board. I think that the set of neodymium magnets will work instead of the set of the magnets that hold up papers on the white board. I think that because these set of magnets are really weak and are not as strong as the neodymium magnets I will be using. Also some of the magnets used on boards are not even capable of holding up a piece of paper or something. I will also use the same amount of magnets for both of the experiments I will be doing. I will also make sure each experiment gets a new battery and the same size of copper wire. The Homopolar motor also runs engines. Like the engine that power your boat. If the Homopolar motor had not My Background Report Brandon Pappu September 22, 2013 Period:2 Background Paper came around we would not have all the cool, fun and exciting things that we have today. So my science fair project is on how I will and can make a Homopolar motor or a simple motor. My Background Report Brandon Pappu September 22, 2013 Period:2 Background Paper Michael Faraday was an English Scientist who had discovered the Homopolar motor. Michael was born on September 22, 1791. Born in the United Kingdom. He was born into a poor family. He then died on August 25, 1867. Michael had won a few medals the Copley medal, Royal medal, and the Rumford medal. Michael was a British chemist. He was a very smart man. He had live for 74 years. Faraday received the basic education everyone did when he was young. He had died on August 25 1867. He was at Hampton Court when he had died. He had also educated himself by reading books by himself. Michael loved to read as many books as he possibly could have. He was known as the English book binder. He is also known for experiments in magnetism and electricity. A guy named Davy had had a big part of helping Faraday. He had helped him do some of the thinking. Faraday introduced his magnetism experiment to the public in 1845. When Faraday was 14 he had left school and a local bookbinder. A bookbinder is a person who binds book as there passion. Faraday sent Davy a 300 page document to try to get him into working/ helping him. Davy was then impressed with Faraday. Faradays biggest accomplishment was experimenting with the magnetic field. Faraday had strong beliefs in his religion, which was Christian. In the early 1840s Faraday’s health was going bad. He died of old age and health problems. If it was not for Michael Faraday history and this entire cool thing we have today like phones, cars, bikes, and etc. neither would not be like they are today. Because all of these things that we all enjoy there is energy and magnetism in all of them. So my science fair project is on how I will and can make a Homopolar motor or a simple motor. My hypothesis is that the set of neodymium magnets will make the simple/ Homopolar motor work.
