Philip Marc Ages was born in a musical family. His grandmother was a Concert Pianist
and renowned children’s author and Poet. His mother has a wonderful voice and sang
often during his childhood. His father introduced him to European music, singing to
guitar accompaniment. He sang Dutch, German, French and English songs.
Philip remembers listening to classical music, in front of the speakers at an early age.
He started accordion lessons when he was 10 or 11 years old. His parents rented that
accordion for about a year.
When he was 16, his mother approached him about learning the Piano, so Piano it was.
He had 6 years of classical Piano lessons, his first a Mrs Gozales, and then the Dutch
composer and Musician Bernard Verkaaik.
Philip took Guitar lessons by a few Guitar teachers, then tought himself recorder,
concertina and Mandolin.
Around 1981 Philip was introduced to Folk dancing and was fascinated by the music of
other lands.
About that time he got together with other folk dancers who also were musicians and
joined 2 musical ensembles. Interfolk Band produced music for dances and special
events, and Skandia Gammaldans Band, which strictly played for Scandinavian events.
Both groups were very much in demand in the folk music circles in the 1980’s and
1990’s. In 1984 he started his own group Folk Voice band to perform more vocals and
continental music.
Philip has traveled to Europe several times, 1981,1983, 1989 and 1992 and collected
music to the ages archives of folk music.
Phil has been a steady performer at NW Folklife Festival, Cultural Crossroads and former
World Festival. He has also performed with his band in the Scandinavian and
International Dance communities as well as for the Seattle Mountaineers doing both
Scandinavian and International Folkdance Music.
He has performed at the Seattle Convention center, Carvery Restaurant and places where
Folk Music has not been seen before.
Together with his wife he takes European Continental music to schools and Retirement
homes throughout the Puget Sound Region.
