THE EARTH’S LAYERS BY: QUETIARA C. PASCUAL (www.universetoday.com) WHAT IS BELOW OUR FEET? • Crust • Mantle • Inner Core • Outer Core ) (www.ck12.org (http://www.ck12.org) HOW DID THE EARTH’S LAYERS FORM? (Adams,2016) • As the earth started to cool, the layers began to form due to density differences. • The densest (or heaviest) materials went to the center of the earth. (https://i.ytimg.com) DIVISIONS BASED COMPOSITION(Desonie,2016) • The crust is less than 1% of Earth by mass. The two types are continental crust and oceanic crust. • The mantle is hot, ultramafic rock. It represents about 68% of Earth's mass. • The core is mostly iron metal. The core makes up about 31% of the Earth. THE EARTH’S INTERIOR (http://www.the-science-site.com/images/pe10-earth-interior-nasa.jpg) CLUES ABOUT EARTH’S INTERIOR(Desonie,2016) • Earth’s overall density is higher than the density of crustal rocks. • Since Earth has a magnetic field, there must be metal within the planet. • Meteorites are the remains of the material that formed the early solar system and are thought to be similar to material in Earth’s interior. Learning about Earth’s Interior(Desonie,2016) Seismic Waves • Earthquake waves • Go different speeds through different material Meteorites • Formed in the early solar system • Very similar to Earth’s Core (www.ck12.org) Image References • (http://www.ck12.org/earth-science/Earths-Layers/lesson/EarthsLayers-HS-ES/?referrer=featured_content) • https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NAHY6965o08/maxresdefault.jpg • http://www.livescience.com/53156-earths-mantle-recreatedmicrowave-oven.html • (http://www.the-science-site.com/images/pe10-earth-interiornasa.jpg • http://www.universetoday.com/wpcontent/uploads/2008/05/Earths-layers.jpg Text Reference Adams,Jenna. “How did the earth layers form ?
