The U.S. combined forces with Britain in an attack on the western part of the North Africa which was led by Dwight D. Eisenhower. This placed the Axis troops under Rommel between two strong allied forces. He had to surrender 250,000 troops in May of 1943 to give control of Northern Africa to the Allies. 14. What was the importance of Stalingrad to the Soviets? One of the largest cities. Factories produced tanks, guns, and other military equipment. Ports on the Volga shipped grain, oil, and other products. 15. Explain what happened in the Battle of Stalingrad and why it is considered the turning point of the war. Germans bombed the city and moved in. The Soviet defenders were trapped between the Germans and the Volga River. Stalin insisted on holding it at all costs. Hitler refused to allow Germans to retreat. It ended up as a crushing defeat for the Germans. The Germans were forced to retreat. 16. Explain what happened in the “Bataan Death March”. After the capture of the Philippines, The Japanese forced 70,000 prisoners to march up the Bataan Peninsula to a distant prison camp. Tropical heat, lack of food, and water and brutal violence resulted in killing 600 Americans and 10,000 Filipino prisoners. 17. Why was the Battle of Midway so important to the Allies? Coral Sea 18. Why was the Battle of Midway so important to the Allies? The Japanese wanted to capture the island of Midway and had superior number of ships. The U.S. broke the Japanese code and destroyed 4 carriers while losing only one. 19. The first major battle in the Philippines was the Battle of Layte Gulf in October of 1944. Here the Japanese used new weapons which were kamikaze attacks. The Allies eventually won this battle and virtually destroyed the Japanese Navy.
