1. How had the U.S. helped with the war before being attacked?
By shipping supplies across the Atlantic. Sent military escorts for convoys.
2. Why were the Germans successful in the Battle of the Atlantic?
They used u-boats or submarines.
3. Explain the convoy system and what countries were involved in its use.

5. After the U.S. entered WWII, list at 3 things that needed to be done to mobilize for
war.

6. Because women were not permitted to fight in the war, they served as pilots, clerks, or
filled other non-combat roles. They along with African Americans were also the ones to
gain new employment opportunities in factories to produce weapons and supplies needed
for war.
7. List how Americans at home also helped the war effort:
 They made do with less food, fuel, and other items
 They participated in scrap drives to collect materials such as iron and rubber.
8. Explain what happened to the Japanese Americans during the war and why this occurred.
More than 100,000 on the West Coast were forced to leave their homes and
businesses and sent to internment camps. Concerned they would help the enemy.
9. What helped the Allies gain control of the Atlantic?
 Better equipped convoys, which had more firepower to find and destroy U-boats.
 Broke German code system.
10. Control of North Africa was important to the Allies as they needed the Suez Canal in
Egypt to ship oil from the Middle East to aid the British war effort.
11. Italian and German forces in North Africa were led by Erwin Rommel also known as the
Desert Fox His army was known as the Afrika Corps.
12. What was the result of the Battle of El Alamein and what was its significance?
 Using secret German Codes the British won a smashing victory.
 Severely weakened Axis power in North Africa.
13. The U.S. combined forces with Britain in an attack on the western part of the North
Africa which was led by Dwight D. Eisenhower. This placed the Axis troops under
Rommel between two strong allied forces. He had to surrender 250,000 troops in May of
1943 to give control of Northern Africa to the Allies.
14. What was the importance of Stalingrad to the Soviets?
One of the largest cities.
Factories produced tanks, guns, and other military equipment.
Ports on the Volga shipped grain, oil, and other products.
15. Explain what happened in the Battle of Stalingrad and why it is considered the turning
point of the war.
Germans bombed the city and moved in. The Soviet defenders were trapped between
the Germans and the Volga River. Stalin insisted on holding it at all costs. Hitler
refused to allow Germans to retreat. It ended up as a crushing defeat for the
Germans. The Germans were forced to retreat.
16. Explain what happened in the “Bataan Death March”.
After the capture of the Philippines, The Japanese forced 70,000 prisoners to march up
the Bataan Peninsula to a distant prison camp. Tropical heat, lack of food, and water
and brutal violence resulted in killing 600 Americans and 10,000 Filipino prisoners.
17. Why was the Battle of Midway so important to the Allies?

18. Why was the Battle of Midway so important to the Allies?
The Japanese wanted to capture the island of Midway and had superior number of
ships. The U.S. broke the Japanese code and destroyed 4 carriers while losing only
one.
19. The first major battle in the Philippines was the Battle of Layte Gulf in October of 1944.
Here the Japanese used new weapons which were kamikaze attacks. The Allies
eventually won this battle and virtually destroyed the Japanese Navy.
