UKMi Essential Resources List for Medicines Information Services This is a list of resources (books, databases, websites/web-based resources, journals etc.) considered essential for MI services to provide a safe and efficient service to users. It is intended to provide guidance to local MI managers, regional MI managers and senior pharmacy managers. The list should be used as an aid to purchasing decisions relevant to MI services. Format of the List The books, databases and websites/web-based resources are organised into therapeutic categories e.g. Adverse effects, Paediatrics etc. Within each category the resources are divided into Books and E-sources (databases or websites/web-based resources). The lists are colour coded accordingly. Journals, Training Tools and Enquiry Recording databases are listed separately. It is recognised that the requirements of individual MI centres (MICs) are different and will depend on the service offered by each centre, the size of the base hospital and the nature of the Trust in which the unit is situated. Where this affects the holding of a resource, this is indicated within the list. Comments are included where necessary to clarify what is acceptable from a QA point of view e.g. if a textbook is available online, or to provide other helpful tips. Books and databases These are divided into three groups: - Local MIC = resources considered essential for all local MICs to hold - Regional MIC = resources considered essential for all regional MICs to hold - Supplementary = resources that may enhance the service offered by MICs, whether locally or regionally based ISBN numbers are included when appropriate and approximate costs are stated to give the list user an idea of what the purchase price of a particular resource is (see also UKMi Discounted Subscriptions section and Appendix 1 below). Editions and associated publication dates are also included. Databases For the purposes of this list, databases are defined as those that require a paid subscription in order to access them. Websites/web-based resources The websites/web-based resources included are produced by reputable/well known organisations only. The inclusions are intended as a guide to the websites and web-based resources that are essential inclusions in ‘Internet Favourites’ lists for enquiry answering at both local and regional MICs. It is not intended to be exhaustive. Version 1.12 Date of preparation: October 2007 1 Note – included in the websites/web-based resources section are the “Approved Information Sources for Medicines Calls” that are routinely used by NHS Direct staff. All MI services involved with NHS Direct calls should be fully aware of these resources . The resources included should be used in conjunction with the guidance document “Effective Use of the Internet for Enquiry Answering”. Any site not included should be evaluated using the quality indicators in the aforementioned document before use. Addresses (URLs) are provided, however it should be noted that these are liable to change. They were correct at the time of publication. Warning UKMi cannot assure the quality of any site that is not produced by UKMi itself. Inclusion on this list does not constitute a ‘quality seal’ by UKMi. All users of the websites or web-based resources listed here are responsible for assessing the quality and appropriateness of the resource and information retrieved prior to use for enquiry answering. Journals All MICs should have access* to the journals listed as a minimum. Other journals may be accessible or subscribed to, dependant on available funding and requirements of the MI service or pharmacy department as a whole. *Access = paper or electronic access within own MI centre OR paper or electronic access via Trust Medical Library OR electronic access via national library arrangements (i.e. National Core Content in England, HOWIS in Wales etc.) Using the List for Quality Assurance (QA) purposes The list forms an important part of the UKMi QA process and as such, a “QA check” box is included to allow use of the document as a checklist. Both local and regional MI centres should hold 100% of the resources listed as being essential. The supplementary resources that are relevant to individual centres in terms of enquiry type and Trust speciality should also be held. Recommendations and advice on the supplementary resources will be given via the formal QA visit. Both local and regional MI centres should include 100% of the websites/web-based resources in Internet favourites or a similar list, such that all MI staff can access these resources for enquiry answering. A list of URLs and hyperlinks can be downloaded from the UKMi website for this purpose. UKMi Discounted Subscriptions The UKMi Executive has negotiated a number of discounted subscriptions for resources contained within this list. These are indicated in the list with *UKMi Deal* in the comments section for the relevant resource. Further details of the discounts (including costs and ordering arrangements) are provided in Appendix 1. Updating the List The Essential Resources list will be updated with new editions etc. on an ongoing basis and details of any updated resources will be published on the ‘What’s New’ section of the UKMi website. The Clinical Governance Working Group will formally review the contents of the Essential Resources list annually. The revised list will be published on the UKMi website. Suggestions for additions or deletions are always welcome and can be forwarded to [email protected] Version 1.12 Date of preparation: October 2007 2 Resources are listed under the headings below.
