SALAH – THE RELIGIOUS MEANING • Salah is the second pillar of Islam – Prayer • Performed 5 times a day toward Mecca • Intended to focus the mind on God SALAH – HOW IT IS PRACTICED • Muslims must have reached puberty and be of a ‘sound’ mind • Muslims must face towards the qibla • Muslims must become pure, by washing (wudu) • Muslims must not show intimate parts of their body; awrah • 13 articles of prayer are said • Salah is then performed in 13 units known as raka'ah SALAH – PROS AND CONS • Can often make the day peaceful and calming • Unifies and presents equality within Islamic community • Good for personal hygiene as a Muslim must wash • Bad as is time-consuming • Is not easy for busy families and Muslims on outings to practice HAJJ – THE RELIGIOUS MEANING • Hajj is the fifth and final pillar of Islam – Pilgrimage • Meant to show how everyone is equal in the eyes of Allah • Intended to highlight the importance of life on Earth and purpose HAJJ – HOW IT IS PRACTICED • Occurs in the month of Dhul Hijjah which is the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar • The Hajjis or pilgrims wear simple white clothes called Ihram. • Begins at the Miqat just outside of Mecca • Muslims then bathe, put on their Ihrams and recite the Talbiya Du'a • Then they walk around the Kaa’ba seven times • Main part of Hajj but not all HAJJ – PROS AND CONS • Hajj can often cost lots of money to perform (for travel and accommodation) • Can be quite inconvenient for busy Muslims families • Provides opportunity to unite Muslims, whether of different ethnic background or culture
