Introduction
 Does not fit into kingdom fungi, animalia, or plantae
 Live in water
 Most are unicellular and some are multicellular
 Features may represent convergent evolution
 Three Types
 Plant-like (algae like)
 Animal like (protozoa)
 Fungus like
Animal-like
 Heterotrophs
 Consume either living or dead organic material
 Method of Movement:
 Pseudopods (amoeba)
 Flagella (euglena)
 Cilia (paramecium)
Plant-like
 Most are autotrophs
 Obtain energy from photosynthesis
 Has chloroplasts
 Algae are multicellular
 Euglena – autotroph and heterotroph
Fungus-like
 Resemble fungus do to spore-bearing bodies
 Ex. slime molds  spores germinate into cells
Kingdom Fungi
Introduction
 Fungi grow as filaments (hyphae)
 Mycelium = mass of hyphae
 Septa = cross walls dividing filament into compartments
containing single nucleus
 Cell walls consist of chitin
Introduction
 Fungi are parasites or decomposers
 Absorb the breakdown products from the action of
digestive enzymes secreted
 Some form mutualistic arrangements
 Mycorrhizae = between fungus and plants
 Grows on roots of plants facilitating the movement of water
and minerals into the plant in exchange for sugars
 Lichens = between fungus and algae
 Alga provide sugars and nitrogen compounds and fungus
provides water and protection from environment
