CHEST PAIN
APPLIES TO:
EMT
1.
Recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiac-type chest pain.
(substernal, tight, crushing, aching pain. Sweating, nausea and vomiting. Pain
radiation, and positive cardiac history.)
2.
Assess ABC’s.
3.
Control airway using RESPIRATORY MANAGEMENT protocol.
4.
Determine if the patient has prescribed Nitroglycerin tablets or spray and, if so,
how many doses they have taken.
5.
If the systolic B/P is greater than 100, and they have not taken the maximum three
doses, contact the on-line medical control for order to give 1 NTG tablet or spray.
DO NOT GIVE NTG. IF PATEINT HAS TAKEN VIAGRA WITHIN 24
HOURS!!
6.
If order is given, administer 1 tablet under the tongue and allow to dissolve. If
using spray, give 1 spray to mucosa (preferably under the tongue).
7.
Reassess B/P, pulse rate, and chest pain after 3-5 minutes.
8.
If chest pain is still present and systolic B/P is greater than 100, call for order to
repeat dose to a maximum of 3 total doses.
9.
Be prepared to use AED if needed.
10.
Document drug given, route, and time on the DHEC EMS run sheet.
