Description and Physical Traits: Lassen Volcanic National Park was established on August 9, 1916. The size of the park is 106,372 acres. From 1914 to early 1915, Lassen spewed steam and ashes in more than 150 eruptions. Finally, on May 19, 1915, the mountaintop exploded. Lava crashed through the 1914 crater. A 20-foot-high wall of mud, ash, and melted snow roared down the mountain, snapping tree trunks. Three days later, a huge mass of ashes and gases shot out of the volcano, devastating a path a mile wide and three miles long. There was a cloud of volcanic steam and ash that rose 30,000 feet. Eruptions of steam and ash continued until June 1917, when the volcano resumed its quiet profile, with minor steam clouds occasionally reported. Since 1921 Lassen Peak has remained quiet. But it is still considered an active volcano. There are wrecked mountains, devastated land, bubbling cauldrons of mud. Until Mount St. Helens blew in 1980, Lassen's eruption was the most recent volcanic explosion in the lower 48 states. Ecologists now study Lassen's landscape to see what the future may bring to the terrain around St. Helens. Features: Lassen Volcanic National Park has mudflats, mountain lakes, creeks, and elevations ranging from 5,300 feet to over 10,000 feet. The park has a variety of nearly every know volcanic feature. Erosion from water, wind has worn down some of the volcanoes. The main volcano is Lassen Peak and it is 10,457 feet. Lassen Peak and volcanic rocks. Formation and History: Every rock at Lassen began from volcanoes. The park’s volcanic domes are part of the most recently active Lassen Volcanic Center, which began to erupt about 825,000 years ago. You can find in the park all four types of volcanoes found in the world--shield, composite, cinder cone, and plug dome. The rocks are igneous rocks, mostly basalt. Panel 3 Notes from teacher: -Title on panel -Write a paragraph describing when and how your landform was formed or created. What is the history of your landform? What type of rock is it made of? How has it changed/ What processes changed it? Panel 3 Notes from teacher: If you have a diagram, explain the picture in captions. Insert and use labels, if needed. This is a diagram of the inside of a volcano. The parts of a volcano include the vent, crater, magma chamber, magma, and volcanic layers. One of the oldest national parks in the United States is the Lassen National Park. Lassen National Park started as two separate national monuments, and President Theodore Roosevelt designated it in 1907. John Muir visited Lassen Volcanic National Park and wrote about his experience in the Mountains of California. Myths and/or Legends: ISHI – The Last Yahi There were four tribes of Native Americans that lived in the Lassen National Park. One tribe was called the Yahi and there was a Native American named Ishi who was from the Yahi tribe. Ishi was the last Native American person of his tribe left. Ishi died on March 25, 1916. Before he died he told everyone what it was like to live in the park. People say that his spirit haunts the park.
