Objective Complement •  A complement is a word or phrase that completes the meaning of a verb, a subject, or an object. •  An objective complement is a noun or an adjective—or a word acting like a noun or adjective—that describes or renames a direct object. Strategy •  The key to identifying an objective complement is first to find the direct object in the sentence and then to locate the word or words that follow it. •  An objective complement renames the direct object, tells what the direct object has become, or gives more information about the direct object. TIPS •  The sophomores elected Laurie Jones class •  Find the direct object in the sentence.
