Vocabulary: Network Terms
LAN Local area network = A local area network is a group of computers
and associated devices that share a common communications line or
wireless link to a server.
MAN Metropolitan Area Network = A metropolitan area network (MAN)
is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a
geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large local
area network but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network
(WAN).
WAN Wide Area Network = A wide area network is
a telecommunicationsnetwork or computer networ that extends over a
large geographical distance. Wide area networks are often
established with leased telecommunication circuits.
CAN. Controller Area Network = Bosch originally developed the
Controller Area Network (CAN) in 1985 for in-vehicle networks.
PAN Personal area network = PAN - is a computer network organized
around an individual person.
PROTOCOL In information technology, a protocol is the special set of
rules that end points in a telecommunication connection use when they
communicate.
FIREWALL In computing, a firewall is a network security system that
monitors and controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic based
on predetermined security rules.
BANDWIDTH There are three frequently used definitions of bandwidth
in the context of Information Technology (IT) and general business.
GATEWAY A gateway is a network node connecting two networks that
use different protocols.
NETWORK TOPOLOGY A computer network topology is the physical
communication scheme used by connected devices.
BUS TOPOLOGY. Bus topology is a specific kind of network topology in
which all of the various devices in the network are connected to a single
cable or line.
RING TOPOLOGY A ring network is a network topology in which each
node connects to exactly two other nodes, forming a single continuous
pathway for signals through each node - a ring
MESH TOPOLOGY A wireless mesh network (WMN) is
a meshnetwork created through the connection of wireless access points
installed at each network user's locale.
TREE TOPOLOGY In telecommunication networks, a tree network is a
combination of two or more star networks connected together.
STAR TOPOLOGY Star networks are one of the most common computer
network topologies.
SERVER a server is a computer program or a device that provides
functionality for other programs or devices, called "clients".
ISP Internet service provider = An Internet service provider is an
organization that provides services for accessing and using the Internet.

ETHERNET Ethernet is a family of computer networking technologies
commonly used in local area network and metropolitan area networks .
NETWORK A computer network or data network is
a telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources.
In computer networks, networked computing devices exchange data
with each other using a data link.
