with the Rainbow Fishies Swimming in the Deep Blue Sea
Hello! We are the Rainbow Fishies Swimming in the Deep Blue Sea. We go to
school in Saint Bartholomew Academy in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. It is spring but, it
is slightly cold here. The trees do not have leaves yet, except for the evergreen trees,
and most flowers have not bloomed yet. Most insects are still deep down in the dirt, so
not a lot were at the top layer of the dirt.
We predicted that we would see more living things than non-living. Some living
things we thought we would find are: Slightly dead grass, worms, an old tree, weeds,
some flowers, and insects. The non-living things we were sure we would find are: rocks,
a lot of dirt, dead leaves from the many trees, twigs, and sadly, garbage.
What we really found was more non-living things than living. The non-living
things we found were: rocks, twigs, dead leaves, dirt, yarn, seeds, seedpods, a piece of
a beehive, bark, bottle cap, and a dead worm. The rocks were small, most of them were
gray. Some were brown because they were stained with dirt. The twigs broke easily,
and we broke a lot of them. The piece of beehive was very fragile, so we were very
careful, we also did not know if any bees were still in there. The living things we found
were: grass, worms, and weeds. The worms were slimy, dirty, and were deep in the
ground. They varied in size, some being thin, while others were plump. We didn’t find
that many worms. The grass during this time of year is dark green, it is short, and the
roots were very long.
We chose the Center of Teaching of Learning because they are in Texas. Texas
is very different from where we live, which is New Jersey. We also chose them because
they seemed very interesting, and we wanted to see what people across the country
have in their state. Another reason why we picked them is that they found a lizard,
which none of us have ever seen in real life.
The Center of Teaching and Learning found dark brown soil that was moist. They
also found many small rocks. The plants that they found were: A tall pine tree called
Slash Pine Trees, Southern Red Oak trees, some large bushes with red berries, Sweet
Gum trees and a few small weeds. The Center of Teaching and Learning also found
small brown ants, a Four Lined Skink, and Eyed Elater beetle with a dark body and light
brown head.
Their findings compared to ours are very different. The Center of Teaching and
Learning’s group lives in the southern part of the country, so it is very hot. We live in the
eastern side of the U.S.A., which is close to the ocean, and when we did the square of
life it was pretty cold, so we didn’t find my bugs or insects. They found Four Lined Skink
lizards, ants, and Eyed Elater beetles, as expected from the warmer side of the country.
Our group did not find any lizards and we did not find any beetles, either. We both found
dirt, weeds, and small rocks. They did not find any worms.
The Rainbow Fishies Swimming in the Deep Blue Sea enjoyed this project. It
was very educational and fun. It was a good group project and perfect for kids of all
ages. It is a good lesson for working together. This project took a long time and was a
lot of work. Over all it was a good project.
