UNIT UNIT 5 3 The origin of life and evolution Lynn Margulis • Margulis held a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Chicago, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate from the University of California. • She was a professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts. • A member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, she led the organisation’s Committee on Planetary Biology and Chemical Evolution. • She was awarded nine honorary doctorates by different universities, including the University of Valencia and the Autonomous University of Madrid. Schwartz and her work with James Lovelock on the Gaia hypothesis. • But Margulis is best known for her work on the theory of endosymbiosis, which explains how bacteria joined together to give rise to the eukaryotic cell, which forms the basis of all protoctists, fungi, plants and animals.
