What is ethos?
What is ethos?
Ethos is a Greek word meaning character:
It is used to describe the guiding beliefs
or ideals that characterize a community, nation
or ideology.
Ethos is the fundamental values of a person,
people, organization, culture, or movement.
"The Greeks also used this word to refer to
the power of music to influence its hearer's
emotions, behaviors, and even morals."
More on ethos:
In rhetoric ethos is one of the 3 modes of
persuasion (along w/ logos and pathos)
discussed by Aristotle in ‘Rhetoric.’
Speakers must establish ethos from the start.
Speakers must have a “moral competence,” but
Aristotle broadened ethos to include
expertise and knowledge.
Aristotle believed ethos to be limited to the message.
Others contend that ethos is shaped by the moral
character and history of the speaker.
In other words, ethos includes the audience’s opinion
of the speaker before the speech has begun.
