British Literature Research Paper (Dramaturgical) – English III
Topic: Shakespeare and Dramaturgical Research, as Applied to Macbeth
You are to choose a production of or about Shakespeare’s Macbeth, other than the one we
viewed from Trevor Nunn, or if requested and approved, another of Shakespeare’s plays or about
his life or work, that may be viewed for a compelling reason in comparison to Macbeth, and
research its production history, the theatre, stage or film director producing the
play/film/program, and relevant reviews or other outside corresponding materials that enrich
your understanding.
Details: Total paper in MLA format, is to be 4 pages in length (including the Works Cited page).
Length: 4 pages total-please do not go beyond 5 pages maximum.
3 pages of writing for the body of the paper-12 point Times New Roman font, MLA format
throughout.
Works Cited Page at the conclusion, as per MLA, with five different legitimate sources NOT of
all one type of reference. Please choose from among: the text book script of Macbeth and other
materials therein, class discussion, books, critical journal articles, video/audio clips of the
production or theatre company you have chosen to work with, podcasts, theatre/film reviews,
interviews, newspaper articles, and any other relevant and credible source you may use to enrich
your research.
Perspective: You should write in 3rd person (not 1st or 2nd person).

(Fri. 5/13).
Final Research Paper and accompanying materials for your presentation to the class-from among
power point, video/audio clips, or other resources which you use to create deeper understanding
of your specific research topic.- due Fri. 5/20. One copy will posted on Turn it In, one will be
given as a hard copy to me, and one you should keep within your course notebook at the front of
section two. Please make certain to save a copy, as well, on a hard drive or other storage system.
Presentations are all due beginning Monday, 5/23-students will be called upon in random order
throughout the week.
British Literature-English III Creative Writing and Performance Project for Macbeth :
Individually, you are to write a soliloquy, monologue, or a dialogue exchange, which expands
the character/s you choose, in the dramatic action of the play as given, re-imagined in the “what
if” beyond what is written in the script we have been working with in our text book. Be prepared
to bring this written piece alive in a performative reading and dramatic enactment of your work,
which will be part of a larger new look at Macbeth, as a collaborative performance based on your
unique works which expand Shakespeare’s dramatic concept. Further development by your
collective group will expand the verbal and nonverbal elements of your dramatic script and
intentions, including adding additional material such as other relevant collaborative writing by
your group, other text from fictional or non fictional works, video/audio clips, sound effects,
music, props, costumes, setting/visual images, etc….
As well, do a character biography on the character/s for which you have chosen to write. Please
write about who are they specifically- socially, physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and
include what this character’s objectives are ( I want X) and super objective ( the overarching
want for this character throughout)— the intentions, wants and needs for each of their scenes,
and throughout the trajectory of the Act you are assigned, and in the larger piece- and the details
which support their needs and wants throughout the drama.
This will be fitted into the larger dynamic of the Act and Scene from the larger play, which you
and your assigned group will be working with, in order to create a new version of Macbeth that
will be linked to the other Acts and Scenes from the other class groups (this part of your
presentation should run about 20 minutes in length). Essentially each group’s production, put
together in a final performance week, will have enabled you as a theatre ensemble to create your
own unique Macbeth.
You will also be responsible for an individual critical analysis of a portion of the Act that your
group has been assigned, as divided by your group. Please discuss the essential dramatic
elements therein, and how your group has reinvented, re-imagined or expanded its content. This
should also be in written form. This will be a part of the talk-back/ question and answer section
of your specific group presentation groups (this part of your presentation should also run about
20 minutes in length) .
Trajectory of Due Dates for All Creative Work:
Our first discussions and planning workshops of our groups have taken place over the past two
weeks, where you have established a Google Docs site for your group, and created the primary
concept for your reimagining of Macbeth. Your first rough drafts of your creative work should
have also been shared.
Our next workshop day will be Friday, April 29th, where further creative work should be brought
in and read aloud in your group. You will also be establishing the other elements of critical
analysis and those performance details as listed above, which will augment your performance.
On Friday, May 6th and Thursday, May 12th, you will have two more workshop/rehearsal days to
complete your work for performance. All final drafts of the creative work for Macbeth are due
on Thursday, May 12th, and will be collected at that time-one copy for me, one for you, and one
that will be kept on google Docs, and saved additionally on a hard drive or other storage system.
Presentation and Performances: The final copy of all finalized creative and analytic work –one
copy for you and one copy for me- will be brought in for presentation and performance for
Monday, May 16th. Performances will take place throughout the week of May 16th.
