within an industry will ensure that you are fully prepared for your career.
PDP Events
Student Networking
Networking plays a key role in your career progression and can be used for more than just
making contacts. Many sources say that networking has helped 80% of job seekers with their
job search. On September 2nd, come out and learn tips on how to network and utilize the
resources available to you. The event will begin at 4pm and will be held in the Stone Room of
the Ferrell Center.
First Wednesdays
First Wednesdays represent a chance for you to hear directly from business people and
understand various roles in the fields of sales and marketing. The first presentation will be held
at 5pm in the Kayser Auditorium on Wednesday, September 8th. Jim McKinley, a founding
Partner of 360Partners, will share about various marketing/sales roles, drawing on his
experience in online marketing, small company growth and technology. Prior to 360Partners,
Jim was a Co-Founder and Vice President of Marketing & Sales of SmartPrice, Inc.
(www.SmartPrice.com), a free service that helps businesses and consumers compare, select and
manage telecommunication services. Prior to SmartPrice.com, Jim worked for The Boston
Consulting Group in Dallas, focusing on strategic and marketing issues in the high tech and utility
industries. Jim has also served as an information technology consultant for Andersen Consulting.
A Baylor alumnus in Marketing and Management, Jim earned his MBA with high honors from
the University of Chicago, with concentrations in Marketing Management and Finance.
Tips for a Successful Career Fair by Brandon Walker, University Scholar
It’s never too early or too late to build your understanding of industries, companies and careers!
The MAPS Career Fair is Monday, September 20, from 4:00pm-6:00pm in the Blume Conference
Center of the Cashion Building of the Hankamer School of Business. There are a few things you
need to know in order to make the most of this opportunity. Students taking a sales or marketing
course should check their syllabi as this event may be required!
Here is a brief summary of important things to remember when attending this, or any other,
career fair.
First, business dress is a must. Looking professional goes a long way toward impressing potential
employers.
Second, bring a resume. For upperclassmen, a resume is essential for obtaining internship or
career opportunities. Underclassmen should bring a resume as well in order to receive feedback
from corporate representatives.
Third, it is wise to have an introductory statement prepared to use for initiating conversations
with corporate representatives. For upperclassmen, it could sound something like the following:
“Hi, my name is XX, and I’m majoring in XX. I read a little about your company on the web (share
what you read here that is of interest to you). I think what I read fits with my strengths in XYZ
area. I would like to explore an internship/position with your organization.” For underclassmen
an introductory statement will probably sound more like, “Hi, my name is XX. I read a little about
your company on the web (share what you read here that is of interest to you). Given that I am a
freshman/sophomore, what recommendations do you have for my (resume/curriculum/extra
curriculars/etc.) to be best situated for an internship/career with an organization like yours.”
Finally, a few reminders specific to the MAPS Career Fair...Remember to bring your student ID as
attendance will be measured by swiping said ID’s. Also, it is an open-house style event so you
may arrive and leave anytime between 4:00 and 6:00pm.
Branding U., Be You, B.U.
On September 17, you can explore what you need to be doing NOW to establish yourself and
build your personal brand. Dr. Pepper Floats will be served after the 5pm event in Kayser
Auditorium.
Internship Advisory Sessions
Not sure what to do about your internship? Have questions about how to find an internship?
Join us in Kayser Auditorium for an internship orientation meeting on October 4, 2010 from 5:00
– 6:00 pm. It is not too early to begin thinking about your internship. Internships are one of the
most helpful tools in mapping your career. A good internship can be a boost to your resume;
provide valuable new skills and enhance skills you may already have; serve as a source of
income; and most importantly, may lead to a permanent job upon graduation. With some time
and effort, you can find an internship that will meet your professional development needs. We
hope to see you on October 4th!

Job Opportunities
Job opportunities for marketing and professional selling students are updated regularly at
Marketing and Sales Job Opportunities.
Internship opportunities are posted on our website.
PDP Tip
Have a vision. Where do you see yourself in five years? In 10? What kind of working
environment do you prefer? Determine what’s most important to you and avoid becoming so
enveloped in day-to-day priorities you lose sight of the big picture and your end goals and
dreams.
PDP Competitions
Virtually Compete with Students from around the World
Participating in a sales competition will differentiate you on your resume. Participating in a
virtual, global sales competition will TRULY set you apart.
The World Collegiate Sales Competition will involve multiple phases of virtual and digital
competitions: voice mail, email, and web conference. Finalists from the early rounds will be
invited to the Championship Round at Northern Illinois University on November 11th to meet
their competition head-on via an interactive (live) role play competition. At least 25% of the
finalists will be from outside the U.S.
Baylor will sponsor 10 students (all Baylor undergraduate students are eligible) to compete in
this World Collegiate Sales Competition. Travel by finalists to Northern Illinois University is fully
funded by Baylor’s Center for Professional Selling.
If you have any questions or wish to indicate your interest in representing Baylor, please call
254.710.4246 or email [email protected] no later than September 3rd.
PDP Marketing Student Organizations
The Marketing Department sponsors and supports five separate student organizations:
American Marketing Association, Baylor Advertising Club, Music & Entertainment Marketing
Club, Pi Sigma Epsilon-Professional Selling and Marketing Fraternity, and the Sports, Sponsorship
& Sales (S3) Club. These student organizations are designed as special interest groups with a
focus on areas of study or career interests. As a Marketing student, it is important that you
develop networking and leadership skills. Involvement in a student organization is an excellent
avenue for developing these skills. Active participation will not only improve this skill set, but it
will also give you start on building a Baylor network that can be extremely beneficial over the
years. In addition, you will signal to potential employers a commitment to your profession.
Take a minute to review what each organization encompasses. If you are interested in
membership in one or more of these groups, information sessions will be held at the beginning
of the Fall semester. Also, feel free to contact the faculty advisor(s) listed below.
American Marketing Association - Baylor Chapter
The mission of the collegiate division of the American Marketing Association (AMA) is to further
the professional development of the affiliated collegiate chapters and student members through
leadership development, community service, training, and involvement in the field of marketing.
Membership is open to any student interested in Marketing.
The AMA offers members numerous opportunities to be recognized for excellence and assist in
the growth of your professional development through numerous scholarships, awards and
competitions. The Baylor AMA also is active in community service. Faculty Advisors are Dr. Stan
Madden and Dr. Chris Blocker.
Baylor Advertising Club
The Baylor Advertising Club is a collegiate chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF).
In conjunction with both the national and the local Waco AAF, the Baylor Ad Club provides
numerous programs including internships opportunities, scholarships, industry mentors,
networking opportunities, and competitions. Membership is open to any student interested in
Advertising, Promotion, Marketing, and Brand Management.
Each year the Baylor Ad Club enters a team in AAF’s National Student Advertising Competition
(NASC). The NASC provides more than 3,000 college students with real-world experience by
requiring a strategic advertising/marketing/media campaign for a corporate sponsor. Schools
from each district are selected to present their campaigns to a panel of industry executives at
the AAF National Conference. Faculty advisors are Dr. Chris Pullig and Dr. Kirk Wakefield.
Music and Entertainment (M&E) Marketing Club
The M&E Club is open to Music and Entertainment Marketing students. Members of the M&E
Marketing Club have the opportunity to obtain internships with major music, film, and theatre
companies and to subsequently have a career in entertainment. Internships are provided
through the M&E Marketing Advisory Board and partners.
M&E Club students operate Uproar Records. Club members carry out the responsibilities of
recruiting artists, recording and producing artist tracks, distributing, and marketing the artists
and their recordings. Faculty advisors for the M&E Club are Dr. Kirk Wakefield and Professor
Charles Fifield.
Pi Sigma Epsilon – Professional Selling and Marketing
Pi Sigma Epsilon's (PSE) mission is to develop the sales and marketing skills of its members
through lifelong opportunities. PSE is the only national, co-ed, professional fraternal
organization in sales, marketing, and management. PSE's goal is to provide collegiate students
with practical business experience through sales, sales projects, marketing, marketing research,
and community service projects.
As a member of PSE, you are provided with outstanding networking opportunities, regional and
national conferences, and sales competitions. Membership is open to any student interested in
professional selling, sales management, and marketing. Faculty advisor for PSE is Dr. Andrea
Dixon.
Sports, Sponsorship, and Sales (S3) Club
The S3 Club is focused on providing students in the S3 program additional opportunities for
learning about the business of sports marketing. Students are provided networking
opportunities, experience from professional internships, and client-based sales projects.
Membership in the S3 Club is required of all S3 majors. Faculty advisors are Dr. Daryl Lehnus and
Dr. Kirk Wakefield.
