Proteins
We are learning to:
• State that proteins are made of a chain of
amino acids
• State that the order of amino acids
determines the function of a protein
• Give examples of functions of proteins
What I'm looking for:
• Description of the structure of a protein
• Table showing functions and examples of
proteins
What are proteins?
Proteins are made of long chains of small molecules called
amino acids.

acid
There are over 20 different kinds of amino acid.
Proteins are used by the body for growth and repair.

Functions of Proteins
• Watch the video
• Listen closely for the different functions of a
protein
• Complete the card sort in your group
• Fill out the table in your booklet
Functions of Proteins
Protein
Haemoglobin
Function
Carry oxygen around the body
Antibodies
Produced by white blood cells and
protect body from harmful microbes
Hormones
Chemical messengers
e.g. insulin, testosterone, oestrogen,
adrenaline
Protein
Enzymes
Transport
Function
Speed up chemical reactions
e.g. amylase, catalase, phosphorylase
Movement of molecules
e.g. membrane proteins
Structural
Provide shape and support
e.g. collagen, keratin, actin and myosin
I can:
• State that proteins are made of a chain of
amino acids
• State that the order of amino acids
determines the function of a protein
• Give examples of functions of proteins
