Intent Statement: To use other words in a text to figure out meaning of unknown word, or a word with more
than one meaning.
1. Most Complex Level (at the level as written):
 Content target: Student will listen/read passage, and use other words in a text to figure out meaning of
the word “advantage”.
 Example: Have the student read or listen to the following modified text paired with the original text.
When they/you come to the word “advantage,” have them focus on the words/phrases that surround
that word in order to determine the meaning. Say, “Tell me what the word advantage means by using
the words around it to help.” (Allow response in student’s mode of communication)
Modified Text:
Smeek is absolutely amazed. He can’t believe his luck. He thinks that since he has had many years of bad
luck, he deserves some good luck. But he knows luck is only part of it. One day a woman saw his cartoons
and loved them. She said she could give him chance to work for her, but first he has to show his cartoons to
some other people. If the other people like the pictures, she will give him a job. He now needs to take
advantage of this opportunity and do something to help himself. He also wishes he had started sharing his
work with people years ago.
“Now use the words around it to tell me what advantage means.” (chance; opportunity)
