HS Algebra 2
Unit 3: Matrices
8 days
Priority Standards
HSN.VM.C.6 - Use matrices to represent and manipulate data, e.g., to represent payoffs or
incidence relationships in a network.
HSN.VM.C.7 - Multiply matrices by scalars to produce new matrices, e.g., as when all of the
payoffs in a game are doubled.
HSN.VM.C.8 - Add, subtract, and multiply matrices of appropriate dimensions.
Quality Core Standards
D.1 Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
C. Solve algebraically a system containing three variables
I.1 Matrices
A. Add, subtract, and multiply matrices.
B. Use addition, subtraction, and multiplication of matrices to solve real-world problems.
C. Calculate the determinant of 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 matrices.
D. Calculate the inverse of a 2 x 2 matrix.
E. Solve systems of equations by using inverses and determinants of matrices.
F. Use technology to perform operations on matrices, find determinants, and find inverses.
Supporting Standards
HSN.VM.C.9 - Understand that, unlike multiplication of numbers, matrix multiplication for square
matrices is not a commutative operation, but still satisfies the associative and distributive
properties.
HSN.VM.C.10 - Understand that the zero and identity matrices play a role in matrix addition and
multiplication similar to the role of 0 and 1 in the real numbers. The determinant of a square
matrix is nonzero if and only if the matrix has a multiplicative inverse.

Formative Assessment Lesson(s):
“The teacher leaders for the Gates grant work recommend that Warren County
Administration adopt the practice that Warren County Math teachers do a minimum of
one Formative Assessment Lesson per quarter. Other choices for formative assessment
lessons may be found at http://map.mathshell.org/materials/lessons.php .
Common Assessment(s):
2016 HS Algebra 2 Unit 3 DCA – Matrices Version A
