A study from the University of Tokyo has shown that EGCG binds to CD4 cells, preventing HIV from binding to and destroying the cell in the process. Methylcobalamine – co enzyme form B12 It is the only form of Vit B12 that can break down Homocysteine crystals, Homocysteine is a very dangerous chemical in blood vessel disease, and methyl B12 converts Homocysteine into methionine which makes it water soluble for the kidneys to excrete It also generates an increased supply of SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine), the body's most important methyl donor. The benefits of methyl B12, are protection from neurotoxicity, in diabetics, and promotion of nerve re generation. A lack of methylcobalamine can lead to megaloblastic anaemia and sub acute combined degeneration of the spinal cord; it is used to combat Homocysteine crystals forming in 7 © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED blood vessels and to treat Pernicious anaemia Caffeine – some facts • Most energy drinks - Quick and powerful stimulant and has health properties. • Caffeine is considered most widely consumed psychoactive substance e and is hidden in clandestine quantities of soda bottles, chocolate bars, coffees mugs, and infamous energy drink cans. • Legend says the caffeine craze all began when Kaldi, a North African herder, saw his goats eat wild berries, which gave them energy that kept them up at night. • In purist form it is a white powder that acts as a chemical chameleon inside the brain, as another compound, known as adenosine. • The adenosine molecule is responsible for signalling the body that it’s tired. Adenosine and caffeine are almost identical-looking molecules, so the brain can’t tell the difference and accepts the caffeine when available. • Researchers found something more novel and profound. • "There is substantial evidence that caffeine is protective against neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease," said David Elmenhorst, lead author of the study and researcher for the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine. "Several investigations show that moderate coffee consumption of three to five cups per day at mid-life is linked to a reduced risk of dementia in late life." • Researchers are currently exploring the idea that caffeine’s impersonation of another receptor may be a way to protect people from neurodegenerative diseases. © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 8 PEAK – Adaptogenic formula 5 sprays daily = 1ml Deer Antler Velvet Stevia Yerba mate Noni berry Goji berry Maqui berry Acai berry Raspberry ketones Resveratrol Mangosteen © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 9 Deer Antler velvet Deer antler velvet has been used in China for over 2,000 years as a medicinal treatment for numerous minor conditions and ailments. Deer antler also contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, and a full spectrum of amino acids and antiinflammatory prostaglandins. Improve mental alertness and memory, boost immune system function, speed wound healing and recovery, slow aging, balance iron levels, improve libido in both sexes, and restore joint health. Soviet scientists in the 1980s tested the effects of deer antler velvet on the performance of elite Russian athletes, and the results were astonishing. Deer antler velvet helped increase the strength and muscle mass of Russian athletes, and speed their recovery time from exercise. The increases in strength helped the Russian athletes shatter new strength records at the Olympics and crush their American competitors. Deer antler velvet is a natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen. The body uses glucosamine to manufacture glycosaminoglycans that are found in cartilage tissue. © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 10 Peak Super fruits © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 11 Yerba mate Grown mostly in Brazil but found all over South America, known as the South American Holly tree, and found in the rain forests, also grown commercially for use as a drink ‘Mate’ and added to energy drinks as a more sustainable energy producer, in fact the leaves naturally contain 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids (proteins), abundant antioxidants. Yerba Mate has the “strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate" all in one beverage. Of the six commonly used stimulants in the world: coffee, tea, kola nut, cocoa and guarana, yerba mate triumphs as the most balanced, delivering both energy and nutrition. In fact, The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific society in 1964 concluded "it is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value" and that yerba mate contains "practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life." Noni Indian Mulberry, grown all over the Pacific islands Anti-oxidant, boosts Immune system, Effective against Gout &Arthritis, anti-cancer, reduces blood glucose, remedial herb for reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Scientific evidence has testified that consumption of noni juice helps in reducing the level of glycosylated hemoglobin, serum triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the body. In addition to this, it works towards enhancing insulin sensitivity and stimulates the uptake of glucose. Scopoletin present in noni juice possess anti-bacterial, antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and anti-histamine properties which significantly contribute in sustaining the immune defense mechanism of the body. Wound healing: The juice of Morinda citrifolia or noni is effectual in speeding up healing of wounds useful in curing various skin disorders including acne, burns, allergic skin reactions and hives holistically. Noni juice stimulates the release of digestive enzymes © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 12 Goji berries Grown mainly in China, also known as wolfberries Rich in nutrients, powerful anti-oxidant. Some studies using goji berry juice found benefits that included a feeling of well being and calmness, better athletic performance and quality of sleep, and weight loss. Maqui purple berry grows wild Southern Chile Maqui berries are very rich in anthocyanins, which are purple pigments with very high antioxidant activity. Potent anti-inflammatory activity, so they help to reduce the risk of a variety of degenerative diseases that involve inflammation. These pigments also inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells. The antioxidant compounds in maqui berry help to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the blood. Regular daily intake of maqui berries or the berry juice is a smart investment in better cardiovascular health. Interestingly, intake of maqui berries or their juice causes a significant increase of insulin in the body. In fact, maqui appears to do this better than any other known plant. What does this mean? Consuming maqui berries or their juice with or after meals can help to suppress blood glucose, thereby evening out energy and preventing the formation of new fat cells. As a result, maqui may prove to be a beneficial aid in weight control. Maqui also demonstrates antibacterial activity, which suggests that it may aid in preventing illness due to foodborne germs. Even in an environment in which the market is literally flooded with so-called super fruits, maqui stands head and shoulders above most of them in terms of benefits. © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 13 Acai The acai berry is an inch-long, reddish-purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. Some studies show that acai fruit pulp is even richer in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries. Similar in properties to the Maqui berry Raspberry ketones Raspberry ketone is a chemical from red raspberries that is thought to help for weight loss. Some research shows it increases metabolism Hormone in the body called adiponectin – made and stored in fat cells, Raspberry ketones act as ‘Fat burner’ releasing the adiponectin and helping with satiety © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 14 SLEEP • • • • • • Melatonin – anti ageing hormone, secreted by the pineal gland brain Assists in sleep architecture, deficient in most people Controls rhythms and cycles in your body Begins Female menstrual cycle, onset and regulation Duration of gestation and onset of labour Assists in symptoms of Epilepsy, ADHD and Autism © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 15 VALERIAN ROOT • Calms Anxiety Scientists have found that valerian root increases the amount of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA helps regulate nerve cells and calms anxiety. • Lowers Blood Pressure • Eases Menstrual Cramps root can effectively calm the severe uterine muscle contractions that cause the terrible pain many women experience during menstruation • Sleep Why can valerian root help you sleep so well? Valerian extract can cause sedation is by increasing your brain’s GABA level. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and in large enough quantities it can cause a sedative effect. © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 16 TRIM 365 © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 17 HCA method of Action HCA - Hydroxy Citric acid Skin Garcinia Cambogia plant Super Citri Max – patented form HCA, stable as bound to ionic minerals Ca+ K+ Reduces BMI Increases Fat burning Reduces Calorie intake by up to 25% Promotes healthy Serotonin Supports NORMAL cholesterol metabolism, i.e. raises HDL lowers LDL Lowers Triglycerides Decreases serum Liptin levels HCA basic action Glycolysis – breakdown of glucose molecule, if it exceeds the energy requirements i.e. too much HGI carbs vs. energy expended Resulting Acetyl Co enzyme units derived from CHO are turned into F acids and glycerol to cholesterol in first step Krebs cycle Acetyl Co A is a product of Pyruvic acid are now in the mitochondria in excess, they get exported out into the cell fluid as a CITRATE The Citrate then gets worked on by an enzyme called ATP Citrate lyase so it can release the Acetyl Co A bound in it These become lipids – fat Citrate therefore stimulates the fatty acid LIPID pathway by activating Acetyl Co A HCA INHIBITS ATP citrate lyase enzyme, so prevents Carbs (sugars) turning into lipid (fat) molecules © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 18 Courtesy Sue Scott A&P lectures © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 19 Thank you © COPYRIGHT 2011 BY LORRAINE RAIK-SPIEGEL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 20
