ABOUTOURCHORALPROGRAM
TheLawtonChilesHighSchoolChoralProgramopenedunderthedirectionofJoséRiverain1999,joiningarich
traditionofchoralmusicinTallahassee.FollowedbythedirectionofTuckerBiddlecombeandMary
Biddlecombe,ChilesHighSchoolhasbecomeoneofthepremierchoralprogramsinFlorida.Thisyearmarks
CoreySullivan’sfourthyearatChilesasthelegacyofchoralexcellencecontinues.
ThechoralprogramatChilesconsistsoffivecurricularperformingensembles.Offeringsincludeanentry-level
women'schorus;acombinedmen'schorusthatperformsformanycampusevents;thelargemixedensemble
ChilesSingers;anauditionedacappellachoircalledPardonourDust,andtheaward-winningadvancedchoirBelle
Chantique.BelleChantiquehasperformedforconventionsofACDAatthestateanddivisionlevel,mostrecentlyin
LouisvilleduringMarchof2008.Studentconductorsleadextracurricularchoirsaspartofthementorshipportion
oftheirhonorscreditinadvancedmusicclasses.
ThemusicprogramatLawtonChilesHighSchooliscomprehensiveandoffersmultipleclassesinChorus,
Orchestra,Band,andGuitar.Thedramadepartmentoffersafulltechnicaltheaterprogramaswellasafull
sequenceofdramaticandstagecraftclasses.
LawtonChilesHighSchoolalsohasbecomewidelyknownforitsmusicaltheaterproductions.In2004,theChiles
Choraldepartmentpresentedafully-stagedstudentproductionofGian-CarloMenotti'soperaAmahlandthe
NightVisitors.In2007,theChoralDepartmentpresentedacompletelystudent-performed(onstageand
instruments)productionofTheTaffetas.ThecombinedPerformingArtsdepartmenthasrecentlypresented
productionsofSwing,SeussicaltheMusical,Pippin,GuysandDolls,ByeByeBirdie,TheMikado,OnceUpona
Mattress,PhantomoftheCountryOpera.OurmostrecentproductionwasacombinedFineArtsDepartment
productionofMeredithWilson’sTheMusicManin2016.

HONORSSTUDENTS
Inadditiontothehighrigorofyourparticipation,concertattendanceandclassroomwork,youwillbegiven
additionaldutiesandwrittenassignmentstoprovideextra-evidenceofyourscholarship,thusfulfillingtheextra
gradepointthatyourgradewillcarry.
1. Eachquarteryouwillattendonelocalconcertandsubmitareviewreport.Thereportmustbetyped,
double-spacedin12pointfont,andatleastthreepagesinlength.
2. Duringtheyearyouwillfulfillamentorshiprole,andwriteafinaltermpaperdescribingwhatyoudidand
howitwent.Thiscanbecompletedby:

Atsomepointthisyear,youmaywanttoconsidertakingvoicelessons.Privatevoicelessons
areawonderfulwaytobecomemorecomfortablewithsinging,inasoloorchoralcontext.
Voicestudentsworkonsongrepertoire,butalsoworkonmoreindividualizedvocalization,
rangedevelopment,andexpressiveelementsoftentoointricatetoaddressinthechoir.All
voicestudentsarerequestedtosingatSoloandEnsemblefestival,whereatrainedadjudicator
hearseachsinger.PleaseinformMr.Sullivanviaemail([email protected])ifyouare
interestedinprivatestudytoreceiveavoiceteacherrecommendation.
Foryoungerstudentsstillintheearlystagesofvocaldevelopment,itmaybemorebeneficial
