From Idea to Market:
STEP Workshop Series for Technology Entrepreneurs
Mr. Butterworth is a founder and principal of Incite Productions, a
Colorado-based nonprofit company that produces documentaries
promoting positive social change around the world. Incite’s debut film,
Seoul Train, has been in competition at more than seventy international
film festivals, won twelve major awards, and inspired countless
grassroots and policy-level actions worldwide. Mr. Butterworth has also
had a successful career in technology and finance. In 1999, Jim founded
LC39 Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm and one of the topperforming venture funds of 1999-2002. In 1995, Mr. Butterworth
founded Netcast Communications Corp., a pioneer in the streaming of
audio and video over the Internet. Prior to Netcast, he worked with technology, media and
telecom companies as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers, where he was also responsible
for building the firm’s leading tracking stock practice. Earlier in his career, Jim held marketing
positions with Unisys Corporation and Data General, and worked as an operations analyst and
simulation programmer for Rockwell International.
Mr. Butterworth is a frequent public speaker, having presented on Capitol Hill and before other
legislative bodies worldwide, to the Council on Foreign Relations, and at dozens of
international conferences. He has also made numerous appearances on television and radio,
including on CNN, ABC, MSNBC, CNBC, FOX, National Public Radio, Radio Free Europe,
Radio Free Asia and many other national and local media. Mr. Butterworth has also been
featured in print publications including Newsweek, Business 2.0, Crain’s New York and Fast
Company magazine.
Mr. Butterworth holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Amos Tuck School
at Dartmouth College and a Bachelor of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISyE) from the
Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the inventor of eight U.S. and foreign patents, an
Emeritus Member of the Alumni Advisory Board of the ISyE School at Georgia Tech, and an
inductee into the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Council of Outstanding Young
Engineering Alumni.
Presenter Biographies
Mr. Mark Levi has extensive experience in the field of semiconductor
marketing, advertising, and branding. Recently, he served as the
Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Zarlink
Semiconductor from 2001 until his retirement in 2005.
Previously, Mr. Levi worked at National Semiconductor, a Santa
Clara, CA based company that creates energy-efficient analog and
mixed-signal semiconductors. During his almost 30-year
tenure at National Semiconductor, Mr. Levi served in multiple positions including Product Line
Director, Microprocessors, New Technology Marketing Director, Vice President of European
Sales, Vice President of Marketing, Analog Division, and the Vice President of Marketing
Communications for the Corporation.
Prior to joining National Semiconductor, Mr. Levi worked worked in Semiconductor Sales and
Sales Management at both Philco Corporation and Motorola Semiconductor. He started as a
Design Engineer at the Nortronics Division of the Northrop Corporation.
Mr. Levi currently serves as a part time consultant for various semiconductor companies where
he aids with marketing and advertising strategies. He also serves as a volunteer Vice Chairman
for SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business and serves on the Board of Director of the
Stevenson House, a low income housing project in Palo Alto.
Mr. Levi received his BSEE from Purdue University in 1958 where he was a member of the
Electrical Engineering Honor Society, HKN. In 1995, he completed the AEA Executive MBA
program at Stanford University.
Presenter Biographies
Dr. Guven Yalcintas was appointed Vice President for Technology
Transfer of the Research Foundation of State University of New York in
May 2001. A former research scientist and research group leader, Dr.
Yalcintas has more than 25 years experience in scientific research and
technology marketing and licensing. As director of the Office of
Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at Oklahoma State
University, he established a successful new office. Prior to that, Dr.
Yalcintas managed technology transfer activities at the National Institute
for Environmental Renewal in Pennsylvania and at the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory in Tennessee. He received Certified Licensing
Professional (CLP) certification in 2008.
Dr. Yalcintas received the federal Laboratories Consortium “Award for Excellence in
Technology Transfer.” In 2008, he was recognized by the RF for "tireless service in encouraging
faculty members to seek external funding for research and to bring their ideas from the lab to the
marketplace."
Dr. Yalcintas currently serves on the Scientific Journals International Advisory Board. A
member of numerous scientific and business societies, he has published more than 100 journal
articles, presentations and proceedings. He has also served on the board of directors and
technical advisory committees for several firms and colleges.
Dr. Yalcintas graduated from the University of Rochester with a master's degree and doctorate in
biophysics, radiation biology and medical physics. He also graduated from the University of
Ankara in Turkey with a bachelor's degree in physics, and attended a MBA program at the
University of Tennessee.
Presenter Biographies
Dr. Stankosky obtained his doctorate from George Washington
University (GW) by researching organizational effectiveness. His
subsequent research centers on how to engineer and manage a global
enterprise in a knowledge-based economy.
He joined GW in 1998, and is serving as Professor of Engineering
Management and Systems Engineering. There he created the theoretical
constructs required for the master’s and doctorate in knowledge
management (KM) – a first in academia. He is Editor of VINE: The
Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems - part of
Emerald Publishing Group.
He also co-founded and co-directs the Institute for Knowledge & Innovation, a global network of
scholars and practitioners of KM. Their purpose is to create universally accepted frameworks and
solutions for knowledge-driven enterprises.
Dr. Stankosky spent seven years as an executive for business development in high-tech systems
engineering and integration companies. He had a career in the military, serving in many
capacities of leadership, diplomacy, and systems development and management. He also held
adjunct faculty positions for over 25 years, lecturing at several universities in business
management, systems engineering, information management, and related courses.
He is a Distinguished Fellow at The Center for Advanced Technologies, Dallas, Texas. He has
published many seminal articles on KM, made numerous presentations and workshops
worldwide, and consults to both the private and public sectors. He is also a charter member of
the New Club of Paris, dedicated to establishing international valuation and accounting standards
for intellectual capital/knowledge assets.
