Nuclear Unit Performance Assessment Marie Curie died from radiation poisoning due to her research with radioactive isotopes and many people still harbor fear over radiation. You are a family member of a cancer patient who needs treatment, but you have learned that the hospital director wants to eliminate all use of radiation. Write a letter to the director, outlining how our perception and model of radioactivity has changed over time. In addition, research one practical application of radioactive isotopes that applies to cancer treatment and describe why we should pursue this technology at this hospital. Due Date: __________________________________ *Note: The letter is due at the beginning of class. Please DO NOT e-mail it to me or ask to print it out* Criteria Assessment is typed in 12pt Times New Roman font, double spaced Assessment is formatted as a formal letter, and is at least one page in length Discuss what mistakes Marie Curie made that led to her demise Discuss the change in safety regulations that have been instituted overtime from Marie Curie to the present (what regulations have changed, why is it ok to use, what measures are in place to ensure minimal exposure, what research or findings support this, what constitutes a harmful dose, etc.) Outline and describe one practical use for radioisotopes in cancer detection or treatment Use appropriate evidence to convince the director that this technology is worth the risk (cite at least two sources) Possible Points 2 2 4 12 8 10 Tone and structure is appropriate for the audience 4 Correct grammar and spelling are utilized 4 46 points Helpful Websites: Applications of Nuclear Chemistry http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/cid/documents/webcontent/003019-pdf.pdf http://www.imaginis.com/radiotherapy/how-does-radiation-therapy-work Earned Points http://chemistry.boisestate.edu/people/richardbanks/inorganic/nuclear%20chemistry/nuclear_chemist ry.htm http://preparatorychemistry.com/bishop_book_atoms_16.pdf http://www.chemcases.com/2003version/nuclear/nc-14.htm Marie Curie http://www.physics.purdue.edu/wip/herstory/curie.html http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q535.html http://www.britannica.com/nobelprize/article-9028252 http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/articles/curie/
