Context
Summary: COSE84 1503 represents an adult individual of possible male sex with
a probable age-at-death of between 25 and 35. Some kind of lytic process is
evident affecting the internal aspect of the basisphenoid and there is a small
osteoma to the ectocranial surface above lambda. There is also suggestion of
some kind of infection to the right eye.
Cranial:
There is very slight new bone apparent to the endocranial aspect of the frontal, with
focussed areas of labyrinthine vessel impressions.
The right orbital roof exhibits an open lesion (c.5mm) to its lateral anterior aspect.
The lesion appears to have sharp but raised margins suggesting inflammation; interior
of lesion appears to exhibit 'fluffy' reactive bone. Despite the sharp edges to the
lesion, there appears to be at least some sort of reactive process occurring, suggesting
the possibility of infection.
There is marked porosity with larger pitting also present to the supraorbital region.
The large, slightly irregular right supraorbital foramen may in fact be part of this
larger pitting. In addition, there is also noticeable pitting concentrated along either
side of both coronal sutures; with the adjoining borders of the parietals and frontal
appearing slightly lifted (this is particularly evident in the right side.
There is severe lipping and/or erosion to the posterior aspect of the sella turcica of the
basisphenoid. This appears to be the result of some sort of lytic process. It’s possible
this might be due to some kind of infection; alternatively it may represent a tumour,
such as an osteolytic meningioma.
The ectocranial surface exhibits a small rounded osteoma (c.5mm) in the region of
obelion at midline, just superior to extant parietal foramen.
There is unusual bilateral morphology to the mastoid processes, with very deep
mastoid grooves giving the appearance almost of ‘split’ mastoid processes; possibly
developmental defects. There is also some slight sutural variation to the right frontozygomatic region of the frontal bone.
Maxilla: The individual exhibits ante-mortem loss of several teeth, all maxillary and
most being molars. There is also some porosity & possible new bone to right
maxillary alveolar in region superior to position of M3.

Context
Postcranial:
Left Humerus: There is a deep, almost lytic-looking muscle insertion to the anterior
medial aspect of the left proximal humerus.
Vertebrae: There is strange morphology to the margins of some vertebral facets, in
particular the superior facets of the atlas (C1), which exhibit marked ‘scooping’ to the
margins of the articular surfaces.
