Kinder- en Jeugdpsychiatrie/psychologie
“Impact of Mild Thyroid Hormone Deficiency in Pregnancy
on Cognition and Behaviour of Children”
Akhgar Ghassabian, MD PhD
Postdoctoral researcher, Kinder- en Jeugdpsychiatrie/psychologie ErasmusMC-Sophia
Maternal thyroid hormones are crucial for normal brain development in early stages of foetal life.
Children born to mothers with untreated overt thyroid hormone deficiency in pregnancy are at
increased risk of impaired cognitive development. There is overwhelming evidence that mild forms of
thyroid hormone deficiency in pregnancy, once considered to be without consequences for the child,
also impacts normal brain development of the offspring. Moreover, small retrospective studies of
children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders point to the behavioural consequences of such
insult in prenatal life.
In this symposium , Dr. Akhgar Ghassabian will talk about her research in the Generation R cohort,
and will present the main findings of her work on behavioural and cognitive outcomes of the children
exposed to mild maternal thyroid hormone deficiency in pregnancy.
Voor dit colloquium is accreditatie aangevraagd voor psychiaters bij NVvP
