SS8 – Exlpor01 - The Riches of Asia The Riches of Asia The spirit of the Renaissance helped fuel what came to be known as the Age of Exploration. The European countries of Spain, Portugal, England, France and Holland took the lead in overseas exploration and trade. Trade with Asia had been going on for centuries over land trade routes to Europe, with most trade going through Constantinople. In 1453 the city of Constantinople fell to the Islamic Turkish army, and slammed the door shut on trade to the European Christian countries. In order to continue trade with Asia and supply Europe with the items that they had grown to love like pepper and silk, the Europeans had to find trade routes by sea. Fueled by an adventurous spirit, profit and curiosity the European countries would eventually circle the globe, discover new lands and new peoples.
