As you may be aware, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and new
Royal Hospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site
early in 2015.
With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria
Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current Royal
Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new
hospitals.
Gartnavel General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some
services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.
These changes mean your base may change after joining us and you will be
informed as soon as possible prior to any change of base.
SUMMARY INFORMATION RELATING TO THIS POSITION
POST: SENIOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN OPHTHALMOLOGY (MEDICAL RETINA)

Applications are invited for the post of Visiting Clinical Fellow in Ophthalmology
(Medical Retina), to join our team based at The Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in
Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow, part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The post holder will participate in clinics in Medical Retina, Macular, Uveitis &
Diabetes, plus IVT injection, photodynamic therapy and operating theatre sessions.
With timetabled research sessions, the post offers an excellent opportunity to learn
about clinical research. The Tennent Institute has recently set up an Ophthalmic
Clinical Trials Unit. The infrastructure and support is available to design new studies
and to gain understanding & experience in running established clinical trials.
The post is based at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Gartnavel General
Hospital, but will include commitments on other hospital sites.
The post may involve participation in the middle-grade on-call rota, in which case a
banding supplement would be payable.
Applicants should possess full GMC registration, a license to practice and a minimum
of 4 years’ (full time or equivalent) Postgraduate training in Ophthalmology.
Possession of the FRCOphth and CCT is desirable but not essential. Non-UK
applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
1. Brief Description of the Acute Services Division of NHS Greater
Glasgow and Clyde
The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of
adult acute hospitals in Scotland. We provide a wide range of services from
community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.
There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as we are
home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national services including
heart and renal transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery. Glasgow is also
home to the world famous Beatson oncology centre.
We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant
contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Research also has a high profile within the organisation. Excellent facilities
for students and their tutors are provided in the brand new, £15 million, state
of the art, Wolfson Medical School, based at Glasgow University adjacent to
the Western Infirmary site.
Employing more than 44,000 staff, we serve a core catchment population of
1.2 million. Our patients not only come from Greater Glasgow and Clyde but
also, in some instances, from the whole of the West of Scotland and for our
national services, from the whole of Scotland.
We have eight hospitals north of the River Clyde, all with teaching
responsibilities: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including Princess Royal Maternity
Hospital), Western Infirmary, Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital, Gartnavel
General Hospital, Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, Drumchapel Hospital,
Blawarthill Hospital and Lightburn Hospital. South of the river are the
Southern General Hospital, the Victoria Infirmary and the new Victoria
Ambulatory Care Hospital. The Royal Alexandra Hospital is in Paisley, the
Inverclyde Royal Hospital is in Greenock and the Vale of Leven District
General Hospital is situated in Alexandria.
With an annual budget of over one billion pounds this is a particularly exciting
time to be joining NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Over the next decade
there is planned investment of more than £750 million, this is the largest
single investment programme in the history of NHS Scotland – giving NHS
Greater Glasgow and Clyde hospital accommodation for 21st Century health
care.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to develop a new pattern of Accident
& Emergency Services for Glasgow that will see:
 Specialist Accident & Emergency and Orthopaedic teams sited 24 hours a
day at two centres of excellence – Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Southern
General Hospital;
 New rapid access for GP emergency referrals; and
 Five Minor Injury Units staffed by nurse practitioners under the guidance of
Accident & Emergency Consultants at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel
General Hospital, Southern General Hospital and at the Ambulatory Care
Hospitals at Stobhill Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary.
As part of the Acute Services review, it has been decided that Ophthalmology
in-patient services will be concentrated in Gartnavel General Hospital with
services being delivered in a “hub and spoke” model.
2. Hospitals and Clinics where services are to be provided
Gartnavel General Hospital
There has been a long tradition of sub-specialist Ophthalmology based at The
Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Gartnavel Hospital on the North side of
the Clyde. As the major teaching and research department in the West of
Scotland the department provides tertiary referral services for a number of
ophthalmic subspecialties for the entire West of Scotland and beyond.
These include vitreo-retinal surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastics, ocular
oncology, age related macular disease, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetic eye
disease, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis and ocular motility. The corneal service
in the department undertakes the majority of corneal grafts performed in
Scotland and receives patients from the whole of Scotland and beyond. Not
only are complex corneal cases treated surgically but the unit also specialises
in corneal and other ocular infections, as well as in the treatment of scleritis
and other severe blinding inflammatory corneal diseases. Also widely known
is the ocular oncology service, which was awarded the national contract for
Scotland by the National Services Division. This unit has also been
responsible for the development of new treatments of eye cancers. Allied to
this is the oculoplastic service that provides a unique combination of skills
delivering a service to patients from all parts of Scotland. In addition there is a
medical retina service that provides treatment for wet age related macular
degeneration and the glaucoma service offers the facility for selective laser
trabeculoplasty as well as for advanced glaucoma surgery.
Apart from the medical staff, there are ancillary facilities provided which may
be considered tertiary in nature. The optometry service provides a regional
service in both Low Visual Aid assessment and for medically indicated contact
lenses. There is also a full artificial eye service.
Paediatric ophthalmology services in Glasgow are based at the Royal
Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill. However the orthoptic department in
Gartnavel undertakes much of the screening and management of children
with suspected squint and amblyopia.
The electrophysiology service in the department has an international
reputation and has grown by over 300% in the last ten years. It has developed
new diagnostic techniques and established new standards in others. There is
a neuro-ophthalmology service delivered at the Institute of Neurological
Sciences at the Southern General Hospital.
There is a Postgraduate Education Centre within the hospital, with full library
facilities, lecture and seminar rooms.
New Victoria & Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospitals
The New Victoria Hospital & New Stobhill Hospital opened in 2009, providing
outpatient and day surgery facilities in South & North Glasgow respectively.
The Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinics are well-equipped and provide
excellent facilities for the service. These include two Humphrey visual field
analysers, Argon and Yag lasers, OCT, a clean room for wet AMD treatment,
fundus camera and fluorescein angiography.

4. The Job

The Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology has a strong record & reputation in
education, research and audit.
The Postgraduate Education Department is headed by an audit and resource
manager, to support audit and research activity. There are extensive library
facilities and Internet access.
The post has timetabled research sessions, with the infrastructure and
support available to design new studies and to gain understanding &
experience in running established clinical trials.
The successful candidate would be expected to ensure that they fulfil the
requirements for continuing professional development. Study leave is
provided.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital
and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the
salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid
monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION
New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but
under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS
