Structure of the Cell Organelles and their functions We’ll Explore the Cell Parts by doing the following: Stating the organelle Stating what the organelle is like by comparing to parts in a city Draw the organelle State where it is found (animal cell, plant cell or both) Cell Wall A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cell membrane. Protects and supports the cell. Found in plants and some other organisms. Like a wall surrounding a city. Cell Membrane Like the gate keeper of a city. Controls what comes into and leaves the cell. Found in plant and animal cells. Consists of a lipid bilayer. Nucleus Control center of the cell (directs all cell activity) Contains DNA Like city hall in a city Found in both plant and animal cells Endoplasmic Reticulum A passageway for which proteins and other materials are carried throughout the cell. Found in both plant and animal cells Like a delivery truck in a city. Golgi Body Receives and packages proteins and other materials from the E. R. for distribution throughout the cell. Like the post office in a city. Found in both plant and animal cells. Mitochondria Produces energy for the cell. Like a power plant in a city. Found in both plant and animal cells. More active cells contain more mitochondria. Ribosomes Protein producing organelles found in the cytoplasm and on parts of the E. R. Like factories in a city. Found in both plant and animal cells. Ribosomes on the E. R. Cytoplasm Gel-like matrix within the cell. Like roadways within a city. Acts as a medium within which molecules can move through the cell. lysosome A small round structure containing chemicals that break down particles. Like the refuse collector in a city. Found in plant and animal cells. Chloroplast Captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food. Like solar panels in a city. Found in plants and some other organisms. Vacuole A sac inside the cell that acts as a storage area. Like a warehouse in a city. Found in both plant and animal cells but generally larger in plant cells.
