1. Basic Economic Problem: Relationship between choice and scarcity
Students will define and analyze basic economic problems, and describe
specialization and exchange.
2. The Allocation of Resources in the Market
Students will learn money and its characteristics, define the economic
system and market structure, and describe how prices are determined.

II. Lesson Objectives
1. Basic Economic Problem: Relationship between choice and scarcity
Through this course, students will be able to:



define the nature of the economic problem (finite resources and unlimited
wants).
define opportunity cost and analyze particular circumstances to illustrate
the concept.
evaluate the implications of particular courses of action in terms of
opportunity cost. Understand what is an economy
define and classify the factors of production (land, labour, capital,
enterprise);
describe specialization and the need for exchange
explain why the benefits of specialization could not be maximized without
a generally acceptable medium of exchange called money

Through this course, students will be able to:

describe the allocation of resources in market and mixed economic

demonstrate the principle of equilibrium price
analyze simple market situations with changes in demand and supply;

define price elasticity of demand and supply and perform simple
calculations;
demonstrate the usefulness of price elasticity in particular situations such
as revenue changes, consumer expenditure;
describe the concept of market failure and explain the reasons for its
occurrence;
evaluate the merits of the market system;

Through this course, students will be able to:

define the concepts of various economic activities: consumption,
production, and distribution
describe the definition of consumption and types of goods consumed by
students and families
identify the positive and negative aspects of consumptive behaviour.
identify the factors that influence consumption

distinguish the efforts of intensification and extensification to improve the
quantity and quality of production (in industry and agriculture)
describe and define the purpose of distribution.

4. The Firm as Producer, Consumer, Borrower, and Employer
Through this course, students will be able to:

describe the type of business organization in the public and private
sectors: sole proprietors,
partnerships, private companies, public companies, multi-nationals, cooperatives, public corporations;
define what is meant by unlimited liability and limited liability
recognize different types of business organization according to how they
are controlled, owned, and financed
distinguish between a sole trader, partnership, and joint stock company
and list their advantages and disadvantages
describe and evaluate the effect of changes in the structure of business
organizations
explain what is meant by multinational and evaluate the costs and benefits
to an economy hosting a multinational.
describe the functions of central banks, stock exchanges, commercial
banks;
distinguish between different types of bank and the financial services they
provide
understand how companies raise finance from the sale of shares
understand how a stock exchange works, and the role of brokers and
market makers
evaluate the role of a central bank in an economy, in managing the
government’s monetary policy and maintaining a stable currency

5. The Roles of Individuals as Producer, Consumer, and Borrower
Through this course, students will be able to:






identify the factors affecting an individual’s choice of occupation (wage
factors and non-wage factors);
describe likely changes in earnings over time for an individual;
describe the differences in earnings between different occupational groups
(male/female; skilled/unskilled; private/public; agricultural/manufacturing
/services);
describe the benefits and disadvantages of specialization for the
individual;
Analyze the motives for spending, saving and borrowing
describe how and why different income groups have different spending,
saving, and borrowing patterns
6. The Role of Government in an Economy
Through this course, students will be able to:

describe the aims of government policies, such as full employment, price
stability, economic growth, redistribution of income, balance of payments
stability;
identify the types of taxation (direct, indirect, progressive, regressive,
proportional) and the impact of taxation;
describe the government’s influence , such as regulation, subsidies, taxes
on private producers.
