2. Explanations of Research Contributions
- We are working closely with two companies Virtual Prototypes and Novasys, and five universities (U
of Montréal, UQAM, McGill, UQAC, Bishop's) in the SAFARI project that we supervise. It results
from a grant (3.2M$) of the MICST (Ministry of Industry, Science, Trade and Technology, Quebec),
as part of the Synergy program. This project aims at delivering various ITS for industrial training and
our application, here, deals with additional aspects which are not covered in SAFARI.The project
already led to 6 masters and 3 PhD, to the delivery of 17 prototypes and a technology transfer in 3
companies, Kraft, Canac, FMV (Sweeden Aviation).
- We are a Theme leader and a Project leader in the Telelearning Network Centre of Excellence
approved by NSERC, SSHRC, MRC.
3. Contribution to the Training of Highly Qualified Personal
- During the last 6 years we have trained 5 PhD students : Gilles Imbeau (Design and Implementation
of an Intelligent Tutoring System, 1990), Laila Kjiri (Curriculum Design Adviser, 1995), Jean Yves
Djamen (Tutoring System for Help in Planning, 1995), Adil Kabbaj (Knowledge Modelling in a
ITS), Roger Nkambou (curriculum design, 1996). Imbeau, Kabbaj and Kjiri are now professors

- During our sabbatical year (89-90) we participated as referee in 4 PhD juries on ITS.
- A NSERC strategic grant (86-89) contributed to the creation of the HERON multidisciplinary
research group (35 persons now) that we supervise.
- A NSERC strategic grant (91-92) contributed to the organization of the ITS-92 conference in
Montréal (350 persons).
- In 1994, we have been appointed director of the GRITI (Inter-universities Research Group in
Tutoring Systems) which groups 70 persons from 5 universities (U of Montréal, UQAM, McGill,
UQAC, Bishop's).
- Current supervision : 8 master, 2 post-doctoral and 6 PhD students. For all the following PhD
