New Farm Clinic is an accredited specialist Mental Health facility
operated by Ramsay Health Care, Australia’s largest & most
reputable private hospital & mental health service operators.
New Farm Clinic offers a comprehensive range of services and facilities. The Clinic is affiliated
with the University of Queensland and offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and day
patient programs that specialise in the treatment of mood disorders, eating disorders, psychogeriatrics and general acute psychiatry. Our staff are dedicated to providing patients with the
best possible care and service in all areas, from pre-admission to discharge and follow up at
home.
In recognition of our commitment to quality patient care and service, New Farm Clinic is fully
accredited by the International Standards Certification ISO:9001.
The Clinic is comprised of three inpatient units, Day program facilities, an outpatient
consulting suites and Community Outreach Service to ensure a continuum of care is provided for
our patients. The inpatient units provide acute care for private patients with an acute mental
health condition. The allied health department provides inpatient programs which can then be
followed up through the outpatient programs upon discharge.
Also established within the grounds are professional Consulting Suites which accommodate
specialist Psychiatrists and Psychologists. There are currently 54 Credentialed Psychiatrists with
admitting privileges to New Farm Clinic.

Services
Both inpatients and day patients are admitted under the care of Credentialed Psychiatrists who
lead multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses, psychologists and allied health professionals.
The Clinic provides treatment for a broad range of mental health disorders and illness.
Each Unit is staffed by professional and qualified staff.
New Farm Clinic also operates an Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) service. The Clinic received
a commendation from Queensland Health for the introduction and implementation of its
extensive ECT Information Package.
Following discharge, patients may be referred to one of a number of day programs offered by
New Farm Clinic. The programs are run over a 6 to 8 week cycle and include an Eating Disorders
Day Program, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Programs and Dialectical Behavioural Programs.
While in the programs, patients
are cared for by a Credentialed Psychiatrist with admission privileges to New Farm Clinic.
The Day Program Centre provides indoor and outdoor courtyard facilities, separate from the
inpatient population, for the exclusive use of patients referred to the Day Programs.
New Farm Clinic is also a recognised training facility, providing placements for Psychiatric
Registrars, Medical and Nursing students.
In-patient Programs
Mood Disorders Program
The Mood Disorders Program is the Clinic’s largest service and provides treatment for the full
range of mood disorders including patients dealing with, but not limited to, Schizophrenia,
Bipolar Disorder, Depressive and Anxiety Disorders, Mania, Personality Disorders, and Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder.
New Farm Clinic provides specialised and
comprehensive assessment and treatment
programs for a broad spectrum of mental
health disorders and illnesses. On admission,
doctors associated with the program will carry
out comprehensive mental health and medical
assessment of the patient. This ensures
accurate diagnosis of mental health and
physical problems and allows
the appropriate treatment plan to be
instituted. Diagnosis and treatment plans
are discussed with the treating team, the
referring doctor, the patient and where
appropriate, the family and carers.
Medical treatments may also be implemented to correct any underlying medical problems and
if indicated, prompt referral to medical or surgical specialists is carried out.
Elderly Assessment Program
The Elderly Assessment program provides treatment to elderly patients suffering from a variety
of mental health disorders and illness including anxiety and depressive disorders as well as
organic conditions.
The Program offers a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of mental health disorders
and illness in the elderly to determine short term interventions and treatments. Through
the Program, we are able to assist patients and their families with planning of long term
management.
The Program is designed to achieve maximum independence for each patient and not only
addresses the individual problems and limitations, but also seeks to define strengths and
maximize residual functioning.
Eating Disorders Program
At New Farm Clinic, we offer a safe, empathetic environment in which sufferers of eating
disorders can gradually regain control of their life through medical, social and psychological
support.
This program provides treatment to patients suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa
and other disordered eating behaviours. The program is conducted in phases and includes
re-feeding, nutrition, controlled physical activity and a practical phase. New Farm Clinic is the
only private facility in Queensland that offers a re-feeding phase in its Eating Disorder Program.
The Program provides patients with skills and support to help them reach and maintain a
healthy weight and to deal with the stressors in their life without resorting to the damaging
patterns of food restriction and/or bingeing and purging that characterize these disorders.
A treatment plan typically includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy,
nutritional counselling and medical management.
Patients requiring support following discharge can be referred to the Eating Disorder
Day Program.
Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) services are provided as both an inpatient and day patient
service. Your treating Psychiatrist will explain to you why ECT has been recommended for your
specific case, how ECT works and the possible side effects. You will need to understand this
information in order to sign and provide informed consent for the procedure. You can elect to
withdraw your consent at any time, even before the first treatment.
Your treating Psychiatrist will arrange and book the required number of treatments with the
ECT Coordinator. Nursing staff will advise you of the procedure time for inpatient treatment.
New Farm Clinic Administration Staff will contact you at home the day before the procedure to
advise you of the pre-admission time for your procedure.

Day Patient Programs
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Day Programs
CBT is a well researched and practical psycho-educational treatment approach to the
management of many mental health disorders, especially Anxiety and Depression based
disorders.
The group members are taught the relationships between feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
In addition, therapists teach group members how to distinguish between different types
of feelings and how to challenge negative, self-defeating thoughts and behaviours. Group
members are encouraged to record events that affect them negatively and present them for
discussion and problem-solving. Proven treatment strategies are taught in a systematic way
with constructive feedback given so that the group members can learn new ways of managing
habitual, automatic reactions to Anxiety and Depression.
A number of groups are available from beginners to advanced therapy programs as well as
evening groups for patients who work or have other commitments during the week, which
prevent them from attending on weekdays.
Please speak to your treating Psychiatrist, nursing staff or contact the Patient Services Manager
to discuss which group programs are available and suitable for you.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Day Programs
The program provides support by demonstrating understanding and genuine concern for
individuals who experience the ongoing effects of traumatic experiences.
The primary aim of the DBT program is to provide education in the skills required to tolerate
distress, and manage emotional states, and relationships. Due to the nature of emotional
dysregulation it is often difficult to address skills training in individual therapy where the focus
may be on dealing with immediate crises.
A number of group therapy options are available, please speak to your treating Psychiatrist,
nursing staff or contact the Patient Services Manager to discuss which group programs are
available and suitable for you.
Eating Disorder Day Program
Two separate programs are offered that address disordered eating behaviour and underlying
factors. The Therapeutic Anorexia Nervosa Support program assists in containing disordered
eating behaviours and facilitating weight gain in a supportive environment. A variety of
treatment methods are employed to optimise therapy outcomes. The Mind and Body Therapy
program for binge-eating disorders and bulimia addresses underlying difficulties with emotions
that are a frequent precursor to binge-eating and/ or purging.
Community Outreach Service
The Community Outreach Service provides a continuation of services, where the patient as an
admitted patient to the Clinic, can be treated in their own home. This type of service facilitates
patient recovery and improves the overall quality of life following discharge from hospital.
This service is particularly useful for patients experiencing difficulties making the transition
from hospital based treatment to home care, for patients facing difficulties in coping with their
illness / treatment and for patients experiencing ongoing difficulties with family and social
relationships. Being linked to a community
based service also assists the family to
develop networks with other appropriate
community services to meet their individual
needs. Ongoing therapeutic relationships
are established with each patient.
Referrals to the service are obtained
from the treating Psychiatrist. This service
is available Monday to Friday 8.00am to
4.00pm.
Referral Process
To attend any of the programs offered at New Farm Clinic, it is necessary to be under the care of
a Credentialed Psychiatrist with admitting privileges to the Clinic. The contact telephone number

aspect of your care is of the highest standard.
The Australian Charter of
Healthcare Rights
The Charter
The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights is available to everyone in the healthcare system. It
allows patients, consumers, families, carers and providers to share an understanding of the rights
of people receiving health care.
Using the Charter
Listed below are the seven Charter rights which provides some guidance to patients, consumers,
carers and families on ways they can contribute to ensuring that the rights are upheld.
You are entitled to raise issues about your healthcare rights. You are encouraged to read the
Charter, or have it explained to you, and to discuss the Charter with your healthcare provider or
family or carer. Healthcare staff should be able to advise you how to obtain further information
about your rights.
1. Access - A right to health care.
You have a fundamental right to adequate and timely health care. Sometimes this may not be
at the healthcare facility you first attend as not all services are necessarily available everywhere.
You can contribute to the right of access by trying to meet your appointments and telling the
facility when you cannot.
2. Safety - A right to safe & high quality care.
If you are unsure about what is happening to you or if you think something has been missed in
your care, alert your healthcare provider. Let your provider know any circumstances that might
make your health care riskier.
3. Respect - A right to be shown respect, dignity & consideration.
You are entitled to receive care in a way that is respectful of your culture, beliefs, values and
characteristics like age and gender. It is important to tell your healthcare provider of any changes
in your circumstances. Respect also includes being mindful of healthcare staff and other patients.
4. Communication - A right to be informed about services, treatment,
options & costs in a clear & open way.
Healthcare providers will tell you about the care you are receiving and help you understand what
is happening to you.
You can contribute to communication by being as open and honest as you can be. To understand
the instructions given to you, you can ask questions if you would like more information.
You can use interpreters if English is not your first language. Interpreter services are free and
can be provided in person or by phone.
5. Participation - A right to be included in decisions & choices about care.
You are encouraged to participate in decisions about your care. Ask questions if you are unsure
about what is happening to you. Involve your family or carer if this makes you more comfortable
and sure.
6. Privacy - A right to privacy and confidentiality of provided information.
You are able to see your records and ask for information to be corrected if it is wrong. In some
situations your health information will need to be shared between healthcare providers. You can
also contribute by respecting the privacy and confidentiality of others.
7. Comment - A right to comment on care & having concerns addressed.
Healthcare providers want to solve problems quickly, but they need to be told about the problem
first. If you have any suggestions about how services could be improved please let staff know.
The procedures used by the health service organisation to comment about your care should
be made available to you. You can provide verbal or written comments about the procedures
and your experiences. To commend health workers, to complain about your health care and/or
to be advised of the procedure of expressing concern about your care please contact your health
service provider’s patient liaison representative.

We welcome compliments and feedback in person, by telephone or in writing about our services
and programs. Please contact the Nurse Unit Manager on the unit, Director of Clinical Services
or Chief Executive Officer during business hours. After hours, please contact the After Hours
Clinic Manager.
Privacy
New Farm Clinic complies with the Commonwealth Privacy Act and all other state legislative
requirements in relation to the management of personal information. Our patients can feel
safe in the knowledge that we safeguard their personal health information ensuring that
confidentiality is respected and information is stored securely.
We strongly encourage you not to share any personal information with other patients in the
Clinic. If you have any further enquiries in relation to our Privacy Policy or our health information
management practices please ask for our Privacy Policy brochure.
At all times patient records are treated with strict confidentiality. Relevant information from
records may be sent to your General Practitioner to assist them with continuing care and/or to
the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for entitlement purposes.
Patient Record
A patient record will be kept detailing your admission and treatment. This is confidential and
access is limited only to the healthcare professionals directly involved in your treatment.
Your patient record will remain the property of New Farm Clinic. The contents of your patient
record will be divulged only with your written consent or where required by the law. You may
request to review your patient record at any time. The Hospital has up to 14 days to respond to
your request. Administration fees do apply. Please contact the Director of Clinical Services to
organise this.
Compliments/Complaints
We welcome compliments and feedback relating to your stay with us and we encourage all
patients to complete the satisfaction questionnaire prior to discharge (provided to all patients
on admission or alternatively, are available at reception). Completing this form enables us to
evaluate and improve the services provided to our patients and visitors. These questionnaires
are anonymous; however, if you wish to write a specific and/or signed letter, your points will be
acknowledged and dealt with appropriately.
Regular patient satisfaction surveys are conducted independently of the Clinic by Press Ganey
Associates. We would appreciate your assistance by participating in these surveys. Please note
that participation is voluntary.
If you are concerned about your care or the Clinic’s services please contact the Nurse Unit
Manager on the ward, the Director of Clinical Services or the Chief Executive Officer. After hours,
please contact the After Hours Clinic Manager. Complaints can be received by writing a letter, by
telephone, in person or through our survey system.
Compliments and complaints cards and collection boxes and located at Reception and at each
Nurses station in he Clinic.
Admission
On arrival, reception staff will take your admission details. If your private health cover requires
you to pay an excess or co-payment, this will be required on admission. Additionally, a credit
card authority will be requested to assist you with the payment of any hospital account created
during your admission. Aside from your hospital accounts, you may receive additional accounts
from your treating Psychiatrist, Pathology, or Pharmacy services that may be claimable from
Medicare or your health insurance fund. On your day of discharge please report to reception to
discuss these costs and payment.
Clinic staff will then show you to your room and provide you with an orientation of the Clinic
and explain routines relevant to your treatment.
New Farm Clinic offers a high standard of accommodation with both private and shared
rooms. All rooms have ensuite facilities. While we will make every endeavour to provide your
accommodation preference, clinical needs will determine the accommodation you are allocated.
During your stay you may be required to move rooms according to Unit acuity and patient clinical
needs.
If any of your address, contact or health fund details change during your stay please advise
Reception as soon as possible to ensure that we continue to provide you with accurate and
efficient administrative services.
You are also required to bring any of the following cards with you for copying by
administration staff:
• Private Health Insurance
• Medicare
• Pension
• Safety Net
• Health Care
• Any other Concession cards
Accommodation
New Farm Clinic has a combination of single and shared accommodation. You may be required to
be moved to another room or shared ward during your stay.
Admission
The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the Unit that you have
been admitted to. Unit 1 and 3 Nurse Unit Manager’s offices can be located adjacent to the Unit
Nurses Station. The Unit 2 Nurse Unit Manager’s office is located on the corner of Unit 1 and 2
corridors.
Your Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary health care team consisting of:
• Credentialed Psychiatrist
• General Practitioner
• Mental Health Nurses
• Psychologists
• Social Worker
• Physiotherapist
• Dietician
Appointments
Each patient is allocated a Nurse each shift who will coordinate your inpatient care. Whilst in the
Clinic your treating Psychiatrist will visit regularly.
Inpatients are requested not to attend external appointments during their stay unless the
appointment is related to their admission or cancellation would be detrimental. Please discuss
any appointments with the nursing staff as they will need to be approved by your treating
Psychiatrist and agreed to by the Nurse Unit Manager.
Transfers and escorts to external appointments will be provided where required; however, a
cost for this transport will be incurred. Patients may also be taken by their carers. The Queensland
Ambulance Service is able to be utilised for transport but requires at least 24 hours notice.
Attire
Patients are advised to dress in casual day attire and comfortable footwear whilst an inpatient
at New Farm Clinic. Patients are not permitted in the dining room or any communal area in night
attire. Footwear is to be worn at all times.
Carer & consumers group
This group provides an opportunity for the participation and feedback of carers and consumers
regarding the services provide by New Farm Clinic. The group consists of consumer, carer and
Clinic representatives. Representatives visit the clinic and are available to see patients on the
first Monday of each month between 10.00am and 11.00am in the Dining Room. For further
information please see the Nurse Unit Manager.
The Private Patient’s Hospital Charter provides valuable information to consumers about their
rights and responsibilities as a private patient: www.health.gov.au
Carer/family/partner
Resource Information Kits are available for carers / partners / family of patients admitted to New
Farm Clinic. Please ask the nursing staff if you require a kit.
We encourage family members to be involved in care planning and evaluation, however, unless
the patient is a minor we need consent of the patient for this to occur. This decision needs to be
documented on the approved carers form.
Closed circuit television
A closed circuit television (CCTV) system is installed throughout the Clinic to assist in the
maintenance of a safe and secure environment for all patients, staff and visitors.
Community visitor
A Community Visitor appointed by the Justice Department visits New Farm Clinic on a regular
basis to discuss relevant issues related to care received. To contact the Community Visitor or to
arrange an appointment (free call) 1300 302 711.
Daily room checks
In order to provide a safe therapeutic environment for all patients, a room or personal
belongings search may be conducted. Although attempts to conduct searches in your presence
will be made, searches may be made in your absence. A ‘calling card’ notifying you that a search
has been performed will be left for you.
Day leave
To ensure patient safety it is essential that staff know the whereabouts of all inpatients at all
times.
As part of the discharge planning process, it may be therapeutically indicated for patients to
take day leave from the Clinic. Your treating Psychiatrist is responsible for making the decision
that day leave is appropriate in accordance with Clinic policies.
Once you have received permission, please ensure you sign out in the Day Leave Register
located at the Nurses Station and sign back in on your return. Overnight leave is not permitted
during your admission.
If you are unable to return to the Clinic at the agreed time you are requested to advise
the Clinic. If you fail to return from leave by the agreed time your treating Psychiatrist will be
contacted.
Educational books/DVDs/CDs
Educational books, DVDs and CDs are available for purchase at Reception.
Electrical items policy
The only electrical items you are permitted to bring with you are:
• A small clock radio
• Electric razor
• MP3 player, iPod, iPad
• Mobile phone & charger
• Hairdryer
• Laptop
All electrical items will be inspected and tagged prior to their use. No other electrical items are
permitted due to Workplace Health & Safety restrictions and Fire regulations. Hair dryers are also
available for use on the Units.
Emergency procedures
To ensure the safest environment practicable for all staff, patients and visitors New Farm Clinic
has a detailed emergency and response plan. The Emergency Response Team consists of the
Emergency Coordinator, Area Wardens, Deputy Wardens and Nursing and Medical Staff as
required.
In the event of an emergency there will be audible and visual alarms, please do not panic,
remain calm where you are. Clinic staff will direct and coordinate the safe evacuation of all
patients, visitors and staff to the designated assembly point.
Assembly Points (The Emergency Coordinator will nominate & direct
evacuation to the safest area):
• New Farm Clinic Main Car Park
(Primary Area)
• Corner of Sargent St & Oxlade Dr (Alternative Area)
The Emergency Coordinator with the assistance of the Wardens will advise all staff, patients
and visitors if and when the emergency is “ALL CLEAR” and to return to their Unit/Group
Therapy Areas.
Debriefing / counselling will be available to all patients following an incident/emergency
situation, please speak to your Nurse Unit Manager.
Housekeeping services
Housekeeping operates between 06:00 am and 5:30 pm weekdays and 06:00 am and 12:30 pm
weekends. Rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily by Housekeeping staff between 07:00 am
and 5:30 pm. The overall therapeutic approach includes responsibility for making your own bed
and keeping your room and bathroom tidy and free of rubbish if you are physically able to do so.
If you require assistance to make your bed, please ask Nursing staff. Clean linen is provided once
a week according to the following roster:
• Monday
Unit 1 Rooms 101 – 107
• Tuesday
Unit 2
• Wednesday
Unit 3
• Thursday
Unit 1 Rooms 108 - 123
If you require clean linen outside these times please ask Nursing or Housekeeping staff who
will be happy to oblige. Used linen must be placed in grey bags in linen skips. Skips will be
available in the corridor for a period each morning. Outside these times, please ask Nursing staff
or Housekeeping staff for access.
If you have any Housekeeping needs during your stay, please do not hesitate to ask one of our
staff members.
Identification
As part of the identification process for medication administration and nursing observations
patients will have a photograph taken. The photograph will be kept in your medication and
observation chart and will remain a confidential document. Patients will be required to wear a

Infection prevention
New Farm Clinic undertakes strict infection prevention measures to minimise the risk that
transmission of infection could occur to a patient or relative. Staff continually undertake
precautions and monitoring within the workplace.
It is important for visitors to be mindful that they may bring an infection into the hospital
when visiting. It is therefore advised that all visitors with symptoms of illness such as influenza,
gastroenteritis or of a transmissible illness (Measles, Whooping Cough, Rubella etc) refrain from
visiting until they are symptom free for 48 hours. More information on specific illnesses can be
obtained from the Nurse Unit Manager or the Infection Control Coordinator.
Some infections can be transmitted through food, so if relatives or visitors wish to bring
pre-packaged or prepared food into the clinic they are to consult with the Nurse Unit Manager
prior. The Nurse Unit Manager will ensure that food is correctly stored and heated prior to
consumption.
Inpatient group therapy
An extensive group therapy program is available to assist patients manage their illness and
promote recovery. Group options and participation will be discussed with you shortly after
admission. Attendance is an expectation of your health fund. An information booklet for
inpatient groups is available for more information.
Laundry (personal)
A washing machine, dryer and iron is located on each floor. If you do not have your own laundry
powder, please ask nursing staff.
Leisure activities
Nursing staff have access to a broad range of DVD’s, board games, puzzles, etc and encourage
patients to participate in such leisure activities each evening and over the weekend.
Patient lounges are available in each unit for social interaction, games and watching TV
outside of therapy time. Foxtel is available in each lounge.
Lost property
Property remains the responsibility of patients. While every attempt is taken to safeguard
property it is recommended that patients do not keep valuables with them in the Clinic. Lost
property is held at reception.
Mail
Mail and flowers are delivered directly to your room. If you have mail to post please affix a stamp
and give it to the front reception.
Meal service
An experienced catering team provides a variety of healthy meals. All meals are prepared on
site daily. We are able to accommodate special dietary requirements and ask that you discuss this
matter with nursing staff. Tea / coffee facilities are available during meal times, morning and
afternoon tea and at supper times.
If you would like a relative or friend to join you for a meal in the Dining Room (at a nominal
charge), meal vouchers can be purchased from Reception during weekdays and from the Kitchen
over weekends.
Patients are not permitted to remove cutlery, crockery, food or drink from the dining room to
take back their rooms. It is requested that all patients attend meals during your Unit allocated
times:

Medical attention
Your treating Psychiatrist who admits you is responsible for your medical care while you are in
New Farm Clinic. Any questions that you have regarding your treatment should be directed to
him or her. A General Practitioner attends the Clinic (Monday to Friday) to perform physical
assessments and treat physical illness that may arise during your hospitalisation. If you need to
see a General Practitioner, please notify the nursing staff. If you are in the Clinic for more than
a month, your treating Psychiatrist will arrange to have another Credentialed Psychiatrist review
your case to ensure you are receiving the best possible treatment.
Patients are requested not to attend external appointments during their stay unless the
appointment is related to the admission or cancelation would be detrimental. Transfers and
escorts to external appointments will be provided where required; however, a cost for this
transport may be incurred. The Queensland Ambulance Service is able to be utilised for transport
but requires at least 24 hours notice.
Medication
Patients are required to bring all their medications and any repeat prescriptions for the
admission.
For security and safety reasons all medication that you bring to the Clinic must be given
to nursing staff on arrival. Medication is dispensed from the Utility Room on each Unit at
approximately 7:00 am, 12 noon, 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. If your require medications outside these
times please see your nurse.
Minors - community visitor
A Community Visitor appointed by the Office of the Public Guardian Queenslnd visits New Farm
Clinic on a regular basis to discuss relevant issues related to the care received by minors admitted
to the Clinic. To contact the Community Visitor or to arrange an appointment please phone (free
call) 1800 661 533.
Motor vehicle policy
Patients are not permitted to drive a vehicle whilst an inpatient. Please hand your keys to
nursing staff who will secure them for the duration of your admission. If a relative or friend
cannot return the vehicle home, please ensure the car is parked in the clinic car park. You will
be required to sign a form agreeing to these conditions. Patients are not to drive whilst on any
period of day leave from the Clinic.
Newspapers
Newspapers are delivered to your Unit daily. Personal copies can be ordered by contacting The
Merthyr Village Newsagency on Ph. 07 – 3358 3309. Patients are responsible for commencing /
ceasing and payment of accounts generated by newspaper deliveries.
Nurse call system
A nurse call system is installed throughout the Clinic incorporating all individual patient beds,
bathroom facilities, group rooms, consulting rooms and the ECT Suite for your safety if you
require assistance. Activation of this system will trigger an audible and visual alert for
Nursing Staff.
Pastoral care
Catholic Psychiatric Pastoral Care staff visit the Clinic weekly to provide a link between the
church community and patients. Pastoral carers can assist with the discharge and transition from
hospital to community and provide follow-up in the community. For any enquiries speak to your
nursing staff or contact the Catholic Psychiatric Pastoral Care office on Ph. (07) 3252 5461.
Buddhist Chaplain services are also available. For any enquiries speak to your nursing staff.
Patient meeting
To maintain consumer satisfaction and quality of care, the Nurse Clinic Managers conduct weekly
patient meetings to discuss any matters pertaining to the Unit. All inpatients are invited to
attend. These meetings occur weekly in the Dining Room at 10.30am.
Patient observations category
As part of our commitment to safety, all patients admitted to New Farm Clinic have their safety
needs assessed, identified and appropriate interventions implemented during their stay.
In order to ensure patients are nursed in the least restrictive environment, whilst maintaining
a safe environment for all. A formal risk assessment and visual observation process is completed
for all patients.
Visual observations will be conducted at timed intervals during your stay as determined by
your treating Psychiatrist.
Personal belongings
Personal belongings are to be kept to a minimum and must be able to be stored in the wardrobe
provided. Patients will be requested to send excess items home. As part of our commitment to
safety, all personal belongings will be inspected by your Nurse during the admission process.
Please do not place pictures or literature of any type on the walls as this may damage the
paintwork.
Room furniture has been placed in each room with consideration of the Health Department and
health and safety requirements. Please do not move the furniture.
Security
New Farm Clinic external doors are locked at 06:30pm and reopened at approximately 06:00am.
Nightly building security checks are conducted by a contracted security agency.
A Duress alarm system is installed throughout the Clinic to assist in the maintenance of a safe
and secure environment for all patients, visitors and staff. All staff and visiting contractors to
the Clinic wear a portable duress alarm at all times for the purpose of effectively managing
all emergency situations. Activation of this system will trigger an audible and visual alert for
Nursing Staff. A Nursing and Medical Team monitors this system and will respond to all alarms
activated immediately.
Smoking
In accordance with Queensland Government Legislation from 1 January 2015, it is against the law
to smoke at all public and private health facilities, and for five metres beyond their boundaries.
The laws are enforced by Queensland Health environmental health officers and public facility
authorised officers.
Patients, staff or visitors smoking in smoke-free areas may be given a warning to stop smoking,
or be asked to move beyond the five metre smoke-free buffer if they wish to continue smoking.
On-the-spot fines apply for breaches of the tobacco laws.
New Farm Clinic can provide information and tailored quit smoking assistance and support. If
interested please ask nursing staff to arrange an appointment with our Quit Smoking Coordinator.
Staff identification
All staff wear a uniform and photo identification name badge as a means of identification and
internal security. If you cannot see a staff member’s identification badge you may ask them to
show you. Please note, as a private teaching hospital we have a number of students on site who
are under the supervision of our staff.
The Patient Services Manager, Nurse Unit Managers, Day Program and Community Outreach
staff do not wear uniforms.
Taxis
Taxis can be arranged by Unit staff. Payment for all taxi services is the sole responsibility of
the patient.
Telephones
There are telephones in each room. All local calls are free of charge, courtesy of New Farm Clinic.
Patients can purchase phone cards from reception for long distance and mobile calls.
Television
Television and DVD players are available in lounge areas in each Unit. Foxtel is also available in
these lounge areas. New Farm Clinic requests that all patients TVs are set to a low volume and
that headphones are used in shared rooms for the comfort of all inpatients. It is also requested
that TVs are switched off at 10:30pm in shared rooms for the comfort of all inpatients.
Transport
A regular Brisbane City Council bus service operates between the City and New Farm. Bus
stops are located on Sargent Street, Sydney Street and Oxlade Drive. A ferry service operates
between Eagle Street in the City and New Farm. The Clinic is a short walk from the Sydney
Street Ferry Terminal.
Valuables
We recommend that you do not bring large amounts of money or valuable items with you to
the Clinic. The Clinic does not accept liability for lost, stolen or damaged property. A small safe is
provided for your personal use located in your room if you wish to keep small amounts of money
and securing small items such as mobile phones. Please seek staff assistance with your safe if you
have difficulties.
Visitors
You are welcome to receive visitors however, please ensure that your visitors do not visit during
group program session times. Children must be directly supervised by visitors at all times.
Children cannot be left in the care of the patient. Visiting hours are 4:00pm to 8:00pm during
the week and 10:00am to 8:00pm on weekends. There is ample free parking on the property for
visitors.
Ex- patients are requested not to visit the Clinic for the first 4 weeks after discharge unless
attending a day program or follow up outpatient appointments. After the 4 weeks, ex-patients
can visit inpatients during Clinic Visiting times only.
WiFi
WiFi is available for patients with coverage across the Clinic.
Patient Conduct
In accordance with national Ramsay Health Care policy on ‘Zero Tolerance’ of verbal or physical
aggression, patients who display such behaviour may be discharged and / or Police notified.
Patient Conduct
One of your responsibilities while in the Clinic is to comply with your treating Psychiatrist’s
orders. It is a requirement of admission that all patients are screened for drugs and alcohol.
Random urine drug screens and breath analysis may also be conducted during the course of
the admission to maintain patient safety. It is known that alcohol, non-prescribed medications
and some herbal medicines may react with the medications prescribed and may complicate
your treatment. It is therefore expected that you abstain from drinking alcohol or taking
non-prescribed medications or illicit drugs while you are a patient, including when you are on
leave.
Under no circumstances is the use of alcohol, non-prescribed drugs or illicit drugs permitted
on the Clinic premises. Any such behaviour may lead to discharge / police notification and / or
legal action being taken. Nursing staff may request a breathalyser or urine drug screen at their
discretion. Non-compliance with requested tests will be deemed as a positive result.

Discharge
Once you have recovered from the acute phase of illness, it is usual for you to continue your
recovery at home. You may be referred to one of our day programs and/or the Community
Outreach Service for ongoing support. The staff caring for you will keep you updated regarding
your planned discharge date. If you foresee any problems with being discharged please discuss
the issues with the staff caring for you as soon as possible, so that plans can be put in place for
your return home.
Staff will assist/advise you in regard to the discharge process.
Please go to Reception before you are discharged. The reception staff will have:
• Accounts for additional charges not covered by your health insurance, which are payable on
discharge. We accept cash, personal cheque, credit card or eftpos (direct payments only, no
cash withdrawals).
On the morning of your discharge; your nurse will have ready for you:
• Medication and prescriptions;
• Clinical discharge questionnaires;
• Patient satisfaction questionnaire;
• Any necessary follow up appointments.
You are required to vacate your room by 10.00am. However, you are permitted to stay at New
Farm Clinic for the remainder of the day. Please see nursing staff to arrange storage of your
belongings.
Please ensure that you collect any items that you may have put into your safe or that have
been held for safe keeping, for example X-rays.
If you have had a general anaesthetic or sedation within the last 24 hours you will need to
be accompanied home by a responsible adult. You should not drive a car, operate machinery or
domestic appliances, conduct important business or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours following
your anaesthetic.
Fees
Aside from your hospital accounts, you may receive additional accounts from your treating
Psychiatrist, Pathology, or Pharmacy services that may be claimable by you from Medicare and
your health insurance fund.
The Private Health Insurance funds determine the level of coverage for medications and varies
between funds.
