Sixth Grade Social Studies Unit 3
Impact of Environment and Economy on Europe
Elaborated Unit Focus
| 6th grade Social Studies workbook
In this unit, students will examine the environmental and economic forces in modern
Europe. They will study how governmental policies and individual behaviors affect
Europe today. Students will explain how the location and availability of resources
affect where people in Europe live and how the unequal distribution of resources
impacts trade in Europe. By the end of the unit, students will be able to explain the
presence or absence of the factors of production in European countries, and how
these factors of production influence the production, distribution, and consumption
of goods and services. Students will understand how the European countries are
economically interrelated to provide for the needs of the European people through
voluntary trade.

Crisis in Europe: Environmental Disasters Imminent
Who is at fault?
LINDALE, GA: Sixth graders in Ms. Davis’s class were
horrified to learn of the environmental disasters brewing
in Europe today. They were equally traumatized to learn
that, despite the gallons of nuclear waste dumped into the
soil, no Godzillas were formed in the Chernobyl disaster.

About The Index
For much of human history, most individuals have lacked economic freedom and
opportunity, condemning them to poverty and deprivation.
| 6th grade Social Studies workbook
Today, we live in the most prosperous time in human history. Poverty, sicknesses, and
ignorance are receding throughout the world, due in large part to the advance of economic
freedom. In 2015, the principles of economic freedom that have fueled this monumental
progress are once again measured in the Index of Economic Freedom, an annual guide
published by The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation, Washington’s No. 1 think
tank.
The Index covers 10 freedoms – from property rights to entrepreneurship – in 186 countries.
What is economic freedom?
Economic freedom is the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labor and
property. In an economically free society, individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and
invest in any way they please. In economically free societies, governments allow labor, capital
and goods to move freely, and refrain from coercion or constraint of liberty beyond the extent
necessary to protect and maintain liberty itself. There are four broad categories for
determining economic freedom: Rule of Law (property rights, freedom from corruption),
Limited Government (fiscal freedom and government spending), Regulatory Efficiency
(business and monetary freedom), and Open Markets (trade freedom). Countries are scored
from 1 to 100 in each of these categories.
