Which of these factors is LEAST important in explaining this phenomenon? a. b. c. d. Weather systems tend to move from west to east in the U.S. Condensation usually occurs in a humid air mass as it cools. Water as a liquid has greater density than water as a solid. The temperature of an air mass is reduced as it rises. c. Water as a liquid has greater density than water as a solid. Answer 1-4 What would be the weather for station A in the next 24 hours? Increasing clouds, precipitation, decreasing temperature Although thunderstorms can occur at any point in the day, throughout the Midwest they are more likely to occur in the late afternoon hours. Which statement provides the best explanation for this? a. Changes in pressure cause warming at lower levels in the stratosphere. b. Humidity levels rise as temperatures rise. c. Surface warming throughout the day causes unstable conditions in the troposphere. d. Rising warm air causes stable conditions in the troposphere. c. Surface warming throughout the day causes unstable conditions in the troposphere. Where on the Earth do the sun’s rays hit at a 90 degree angle? equator FREE!!!!! FREE!!! DAILY DOUBLE DAILY DOUBLE Since more of the sun’s rays are absorbed the equator than at the poles, a heat imbalance exists. Two phenomena help transfer this heat, name one Global wind patterns ocean currents Which of the following statements describes what happens when the sun heats water and land? A. Land heats more slowly than water does. B. Water heats more slowly than land does. C. Water and land absorb heat from the sun at the same rate. D. Both absorb heat at the same rate, but water releases it faster. B. Water heats more slowly than land does. Throughout any given day the sun’s rays strike earth’s surface where much of it is absorbed changing to heat. This heat then transfers itself to the air directly above the surface primarily through radiation. What does the warmer air now do and what is the name of the process? Expands and rises, convection Answer 3-1 Name any one windbelt Tradewinds polar easterlies westerlies Answer 3-2 Each of the arrows in the different wind belts tend to curve due to the ________ effect Coriolis effect Answer 3-3 Tradewinds are located between which two points? Question 3-3 C and D 0-30 degrees N and S Answer 3-4 The westerlies are located between which two latitudes N and S? Question 3-4 30 and 60 degrees In between the convection cells located at Point A we would find a. High pressure and clear skies b. Low pressure and clear skies c. High Pressure and cloudy skies d. Low Pressure and cloudy skies d. Low Pressure and cloudy skies Answer 4-1 In both climatographs, which month shows most precipitation? march Answer 4-2 What climate zone does the city on the left represent? Temperate Which of the following is NOT a potential result of climate change? A. B. C. D. Hurricane activity sea-level change orbital change Global warming C. Orbital Change There are 4 primary factors that can cause climate change. Which factor can cause an immediate change in climate lasting several years? Volcano eruption Which one of the following statements best explains why climates at continental shorelines generally have a smaller yearly temperature range than inland climates at the same latitude? A. Land changes temperature rapidly, due to the high specific heat and lack of transparency of land. B. Land is a poor absorber and a poor conductor of heat energy. C. Ocean water changes temperature slowly, due to the high specific heat and transparency of water. D. Ocean water is a good absorber and a good conductor of heat energy. C. Ocean water changes temperature slowly, due to the high specific heat and transparency of water. Answer 5-1 In 1995 which country emitted the most carbon dioxide? E. Europe and FSU List one characteristic of a cP air mass Dry (continental) cool (polar) What type of air mass does Washington State have giving it a cool, damp climate? mP The air temperature and the wet-bulb temperature were measured and both were found to be 18 oC. Two hours later, measurements were taken again and the air temperature was 20 oC, while the wet-bulb temperature remained 18 oC. What happened to the relative humidity of the air during those two hours decrease There are four factors that the temperature of the atmosphere at the Earth’s surface depends on in a specific area, name two. Latitude surface features time of year time of day A. List three consequences of global warming B. Supply two solutions to decrease global warming A. List three consequences of global warming B. Supply two solutions to decrease global warming Final Jeopardy Question
