Prescription for Success Brackets are what stand between you and your patients. That critical interface impacts user ergonomics, clinical performance, and treatment efficiency every hour of every day. The clinical performance of an appliance system, or how well it positions teeth, is a function of several variables, including: • Bracket design • Bracket/slot siting • Slot size/archwire dimension interplay • Ligation method • Prescription values Prescription values are an integral component of the Straight-Wire Appliance concept. Not all manufacturers produce brackets with the same fundamental design features, ligation mechanisms, and/or prescription values. Prescription values in particular have an obvious and quantifiable effect on the final positions of teeth. Unpredictable, incomplete, or incorrect expression of bracket prescription will negatively influence the quality and consistency of clinical outcomes, as well as total treatment efficiency. In this course, participants will learn: • How to maximize clinical performance of brackets through design, siting, and prescription values • How bracket prescription values can be fully expressed without completely filling the slot • How to compare different commercially available prescriptions • How ligation and de-ligation methods affect performance and ergonomics • Why achieving optimal occlusion and optimal smile esthetics, while keeping roots over basal bone, are not mutually exclusive treatment goals • How archwire form influences bracket performance Dr. Will Andrews completed orthodontic training at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) in 1992. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, an assistant Dr. Will Andrews clinical professor at UCSF, and an adjunct assistant professor at West Virginia University. Dr. Andrews has lectured worldwide, published articles about the 6E Orthodontic Philosophy, and maintains a private practice limited to orthodontics in San Diego, CA.
