Course description:

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of storage and retrieval of
data. Topics include: Fundamentals of Databases - Terminology, Historical
Evolution, Design, Implementation, and Use. Database Management Systems
- Entity-Relationship Data Model, Relational Model, Non-Relational Models.
Database - Design and Implement in an existing Database Management
System.

Prerequisites: CMPS 145- Introduction to Computer Studies, CMPS 157 Systems
Analysis and Design
Course Objectives:
 At the end of this course, students will:

1.
Understand the fundamentals of databases and database management systems
2.
Understand the basics of data modeling using the entity-relationship model.
3.
Study and practice the basic concepts of the relational model and
normalization.
4.
Study the fundamentals of database application design and development,
based on the relational model.
5.
Develop a working knowledge of structured query language (SQL).
6.
Design and develop an actual database application using Microsoft Access.

Departmental Policy on Penalties for Collaboration in Information Technology
Courses
In this section we specify the sanctions to be applied, in accordance with the guidelines of the University Policy on
Academic Dishonesty, if a student is determined to have committed an act of academic dishonesty or collaboration
within this department.
When two or more students are determined to have improperly collaborated:
a) The first occurrence will be punished by a zero on the assignment; resulting in a reduction of the final grade.
Note that as a result, collaboration on an assignment that is a substantial part of the final grade will likely lead to
failure in the course.
b) The next occurrence will be punished by an F in the course.
c) Whenever an incident occurs, a record of the incident will be included in the student’s file both in the
Department of Information Technology and the Office of Student Records. If a student is involved in multiple
incidents across more than one course, the Department of Information Technology will refer the matter to the
appropriate University body for consideration of more severe sanctions, as outlined in the Student Handbook. In
addition, the department will consider the disqualification of the student from the department due to
demonstrated low integrity.
d) These penalties are to be applied to all students involved in the incident.
e) Students may appeal any penalty using the procedures outlined in the Student Handbook.
CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT
Cell phones can ONLY be set to vibrate mode. Once a call comes in, you have the option of answering it, but must
do so OUTSIDE of the classroom and far enough to prevent distraction of other students.
There is a 15 minute grace period in which students can enter class after which no one will be allowed to enter.
You must NOT disturb or distract the class while entering. If you are inconsiderate and interrupt the class, you will
be asked to leave. If you are late or absent, it is your responsibility to find out what information you have missed and
what assignments are due from your colleagues.
As soon as class begins, no student is allowed to use the computer unless otherwise instructed by the lecturer.
If you need to see me outside of class, my hours of availability are posted outside my door. In addition, ALWAYS
knock and ONLY when acknowledged do you enter the office.
Once a test has been returned to you, you have exactly one week from the date received to make queries or raise any
concerns regarding your grade etc. Each student must take all tests. I reserve the right to determine whether a
makeup test should be done.
All assignments MUST be turned in at the beginning of class on the date due or emailed by specified time. If, for
any reason, you cannot attend class on a day an assignment is due, please notify me in advance or make necessary
arrangements for it to get to me. Late assignments will be PENALIZED by 5% for each day it is late.
If the instructor is not available when class begins, students are expected to wait until he arrives.
If you would like to discuss any unfavorable situation that is affecting your learning, please feel free to see me. I will
be more than happy to help. If I cannot assist you, then I will ask the Department Chair to look into the matter.
Final Note: The lecturer reserves the right to propose changes to this course-outline as necessary to ensure that the
objectives of are accomplished. Students will be notified in advance of changes to be made.
