Chemistry Timeline Instructions History of the Atom: Time Line • • • Using a search engine on the internet look up each of the scientists on the list below and determine which of the discoveries they should be credited with in the development of the modern atomic theory. Create a table with three columns (date, scientist, and discovery) fill in the dates chronologically from oldest to newest. List the scientist and their discovery next to the appropriate date. Do not just put the letter of the discovery, write it out. These will become a part of your notes, so do a good job. Please do this in pencil in case you made any errors so you will be able to correct them. Scientists: 1911 Lord Earnest Rutherford 400 BC Democritus 1909 Robert Millikan 1897 G Johnstone Stoney 1897 JJ Thomsen (approx.)1927-1932 Heisenberg 1932 James Chadwick 1808 John Dalton 1900 Max Planck 1930 Schrodinger Pre 400 BC Greek Philosphers 1913 Henry Moseley 400 BC Aristotle 1913 Nils Bohr 1810 Amadeo Avagadro 1907 Marie Curie 1927 Irene Joliet-Curie 1869 Dmitri Mendeleev 1906 Hans Geiger 1942 Enrico Fermi Discoveries: A. Discovered the charge of an electron by the oil drop experiment B. Isolated polonium, discovered radioactivity, and Nobel Prize winner. C. Measured the magnitude of the positive charge of the nucleus D. Planetary model of the atom E. First to bombard Be with Alpha particles (Daughter of Marie and Pierre) F. Coined the word ”atomos” meaning atom G. Uncertainty principle H. Named neutrons and also bombarded Be with Alpha particles. I. Discovered the atom’s nucleus by shooting Alpha particles into gold foil. J. First to theorize that atoms are small indivisible particles. K. Used the cathode ray tube to ID negative particles which led to the plum pudding model of the atom. L. Theorized that all matter is continuous and not made of particles. M. Stated that equal volumes of different gases have equal numbers of molecules. N. Named the electron after its discovery by Thomas. O. Quaker school teacher that designed the atomic theory. P. Arranged elements into 7 groups with similar properties. He discovered that the properties of elements “were periodic functions of their atomic weights/masses”. Q. Used the idea of quanta (discrete units of energy) to explain hot glowing matter. R. Viewed electrons as continuous clouds and introduced “wave mechanics” as a mathematical model of the atom. S. Developed and electrical device to “click” when hit with alpha particles T. Conducted the first controlled chain reaction releasing energy from the atoms nucleus.
