wipro.com Adverse Event Detection An adverse event (AE) is any untoward medical occurrence with a patient or clinical investigation subject who has been administered a pharmaceutical product and which does not necessarily have a causal relationship with this treatment. The objective of pharmacovigilance is to deal with identifying hazards from pharma products and minimizing risk to patients. Companies need to have such a process to assess compliance to global laws, guidance and regulation. Typically, a patient or physician reports an adverse event through a phone call or letters. This is an obligation imposed on pharma companies to provide the channels for reporting, record the cases, investigate and show the outcome of the investigation. People are increasingly using social media to provide their feedback and talk about drugs or devices in case of adverse side effects. Social Media Surveillance About the solution Wipro’s Adverse Event detection ‘app’ is a solution that crawls social media such as Facebook, Twitter etc. as well as special forums where people discuss about the treatments. This is done to identify sentiments towards a drug or device and segmented by demographical dimension to see if an adverse event is present. An obligatory Adverse Event is noted only when following information is present: an identifiable patient, an identifiable reporter, specific drug or biologic involved in the event, an adverse event or fatal outcome. It also records perceptions towards competitors’ products. Detection of Adverse Events The app incorporates text processing and standardization for transformation of free form text on social media. It also leverages an event detection algorithm based on modified KMP [Please expand the term] algorithm to look for a word or string with collocation parameterization and sentiment analysis to determine the underlying intent of their comments on social media websites. It provides demographic segmentation based on consensus and reports on any potential adverse event being talked about in social media.
