Muhammed
Christianity
 This is a monotheistic religion and is centered on the belief in Jesus
as the Son of God.
 Christ – from the Greek word “christos” meaning “anointed” or
messiah
Christianity
 Jesus was a Jew born in Bethlehem,
in modern day Israel
 According to the Gospels, Jesus was
born to Mary, who was a virgin
Nazareth
 Grew up in the city of Nazareth
 Jesus’ teachings emphasized
spiritual equality, appealing mostly
to women and the poor
Bethlehem
Christianity
 According to Matthew, Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the
wilderness to endure temptation from Satan
 Jesus next began gathering his disciples, and traveled throughout
Galilee, teaching and preaching
 Jesus delivered the famous Sermon on the Mount, where he taught
many of his well-known lessons, including the Beatitudes (“Blessed
are the…”)
Christianity
 Jesus was a controversial figure, and many leaders and priests in the area
disliked him
 Judas was betrayed by one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, and was turned
over to the authorities
 He was put on trial and found guilty of blasphemy and sentenced to be
crucified
 Crucified on “Good Friday”
 Resurrection on “Resurrection Sunday,” or “Easter Sunday”
 Christianity then spread by the disciples, along with Saul/Paul who wrote
most of the New Testament
Islam
 Islam means “Submission to God”
 Founded by Muhammed, born c. 570 AD
 Raised by his uncle
 At the age of 40, Muhammed has a dream
and the angel Gabriel appears to him
at Mecca
Islam
 Gabriel says he has been chosen by God to be a prophet
 Continues to give him revelations, the basis of the Koran or Qur’an
 Develops a few followers, but his message of one God, Allah, and
of helping those less fortunate alienates people
Islam
 An assassination attempt causes him to flee to Medina
 A war develops between his followers in Medina and an army from
Mecca
 His group wins, and they return to Mecca
 He says no further “jihads” or struggles or war
 Dies in 632 AD
 He never claimed to be a messiah, just a prophet sent by God to
complete (and correct) God’s message
Judaism
 There is one God who created the universe
 He revealed the Torah to Moses as a guide to life
 Still waiting for the Messiah
 It is more about practices…doing right or wrong in the eyes of God
Judaism
Orthodox Judaism:
 Shirts are frayed at the bottom to show humility
 Outside they wear fedoras
 Inside they were yarmulke (yah-ma-kuh)
Judaism
 Torah
 First five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy)
 These are historical books
 Talmud
 6,200 pages long
 “Oral Torah,” a tradition explaining what the Torah scriptures mean and how to
interpret them and apply the laws
