Math 135 – Unit 3 - TH#3 - Fall 2016
Name
Due: Thursday 10/20/16
You may receive help on this assignment but should be able to show your understanding of the solutions. This will be collected at
the start of class and will not be accepted after due date. WRITE ALL PROBABILITIES AS BOTH FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST HUNDRETH. Show all work where applicable!!!
1) Two die are rolled and the numbers on each are recorded.
a) List the sample space (all possible outcomes)
b) List the outcomes in the event E = the sum of the die is 9.
c) Find the probability that the sum of the die is greater than 10.
2) The following probability distribution displays our classes exercise hours. Assume for this problem one can only exercise
an exact number of hours (no minutes).
X = # hours exercise per 0
week

a) If a randomly selected person was chosen from this class what are the following probabilities?
1) P(exactly 4 hours)
2) P(less than 2 hours)
3) P(at least 3 hours)
b) If two randomly selected people are chosen from this class, what is the probability both exercise exactly 3 hours?
c) Create a graph that displays the probability distribution function above.
3)
The probability that a person from this class finds it inappropriate to talk on a cell phone while at the checkout
counter of a store is 70%. 9 students are randomly selected.
a) Explain why this can be represented as a binomial distribution (4 criteria).
b) Find the probability that exactly two students find it inappropriate (use formula - show work).
c) Find the probability that at least 5 find it inappropriate (use binomial table - show work).
d) Find the probability that less than 2 find it inappropriate (use binomial table - show work).
4)
At HVCC 18% of students take Statistics (lucky them!), 53% take Sociology and 7% take both classes. If a student is
randomly selected:
a) What is the probability the student is taking Statistics or Sociology?
b) What is the probability the student is not take Sociology?
5) A box contains 7 green cubes, 5 red cubes,4 orange cubes, 3 white cubes and 1 pink cube. A cube is chosen, not replaced
and then another cube is chosen. Find the probability that the first cube is orange and the second is green.
6) A box contains 7 green cubes, 5 red cubes,4 orange cubes, 3 white cubes and 1 pink cube. A cube is chosen, replaced and
then another cube is chosen. Find the probability that the first cube is orange and the second is green.
7) A box contains 7 green cubes, 5 red cubes,4 orange cubes, 3 white cubes and 1 pink cube. A cube is chosen. Find the
probability that the cube is pink or orange.
8) Use the table below to answer the questions that follow: (note these are results from our class survey: What did you

What is the probability that a randomly selected student (write as fraction and decimal rounded to two decimal places):
a) Is a female?
b) Is a male or has eggs for breakfast?
c) Has fruit for breakfast, given the student is a female?
d) Is a male and has nothing for breakfast?
