UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies Mission To be a leading center in the pursuit of knowledge through relevant teaching, research and consultancy in partnership with other stakeholders in the fields of anthropology and gender and development Vision To be a Center of Excellence in teaching and Research in anthropology and gender and development in Eastern Africa 1 Brief Institutional Profile The Institute of African Studies (IAS), now renamed Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS) has been in existence since 1970. At its inception, the Institute was mandated to carry out research into socio-cultural issues including research in the field of African prehistory and history; musicology and dance; traditional and modern arts crafts; religion and other belief systems. This became its main focus of research for close to 15 years. In 1986, the Institute’s mandate was expanded to include training in Anthropology and in 1999 a gender and development programme was introduced. Academic Programmes B.A in Anthropology The study of Anthropology is now widely Recognized in developmental circles as a Crucial subject in the development of any nation. Many countries in Africa are Currently going through economic, Demographic and political transition. From unpayable debts to AIDS, from Famines to population explosions, from Political violence to refugee camps, Human suffering exists on a scale that Is difficulty to comprehend. Anthropologists Are being called upon to use their Anthropological training and skills to Address such problems and challenges. In spite of this need. we still have a serious Shortage of practicing anthropologists in Kenya. 2 . This course is, therefore, designed to fill the need Created by lack of qualified locally trained Anthropologists. It is meant to prepare the student To face current and future challenges of Development in Kenya, given anthropology’s Holistic approach to issues. B.A in Gender and Development Studies This degree programme is designed and developed to articulate gender and development issues in a changing socio-economic and cultural environment. The overarching concern is that the goal of sustainable development cannot be achieved without the full participation of men and women as equal partners in the development and decision making processes at all levels. A persistent challenge is how to overcome the constraints that limit women’s access to resources and participation in the development process on equitable and democratic basis through continuous gender negotiations. The overall objective of the course is to sensitize students to the concept of gender as a cross-cutting issue which impinges on all aspects of human life.
