Physics 1402: General Physics II RANGER COLLEGE Spring 2012 Instructor: Melisa Lewis, MS Math E-mail: [email protected] Office hours: Available by appointment only, email correspondence is recommended. Class Hours: T/Th 1:50-3:05 Lab Hours: M/W 1:50-3:05 Textbook & Laboratory Manual: Physics Principles with Applications, Sixth Edition by Giancoli, Pearson/Prentice Hall 2005 Catalog Description: Algebra and trig-level physics with laboratory. Waves, motion, electricity and magnetism, and introduction to modern physics. Required Prerequisites: Physics 1401 Methods of Instruction: Lecture and supervised classroom problem-solving, demonstrations, technology or audio/video programs, and student laboratory experiments and/or projects. Intended Student Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to demonstrate the ability to -apply wave concepts including reflection, and interference to analyze and explain wave phenomena. -apply sound concepts including sound sources, beats, and the Doppler effect. -apply the properties of light to analyze and explain various optical and natural phenomena. -use basic concepts of electricity and magnetism to analyze or describe electromagnetic phenomena including electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, electric potential and currents, DC circuits, and magnetism. -apply atomic structure concepts to analyze nuclear physics and energy phenomena. -conduct laboratory investigations using safe and appropriate practices. Course/Classroom Policies: o Students are expected to attend on time and be prepared for every class and lab. o Students who will to miss class due to an official absence are expected to inform the instructor ASAP and submit documentation confirming the official absence. o Students are solely responsible for obtaining assignments and other materials for classes from which they are absent (official and unofficial absence). o Students are expected to complete each assignment by the specified due date/time. No late work will be accepted. o Students are expected to utilize safe lab techniques as specified by the instructor. o Students are expected to adhere to campus and instructor behavior policies. o Students are expected to turn off all personal technology devices before entering the classroom, including but not limited to cell phones, music players, computers, etc. Cell phone use is not permitted in the classroom for any reason (including calculator applications). Academic Dishonesty: A student found cheating or copying on an exam or assignment will be given a grade of zero. In severe or repeated cases, a student may be dropped from the class. ADA Statement: Ranger College (and Early High School) provides a variety of services for students with learning and/or physical disabilities. The student is responsible for making the initial contact with the Ranger College (Early High Physics 1402: General Physics II RANGER COLLEGE Spring 2012 Instructor: Melisa Lewis, MS Math E-mail: [email protected] Office hours: Available by appointment only, email correspondence is recommended. School) Counselor. It is advisable to make this contact before or immediately after the semester begins. Grading: The final grade for this course will be based upon writing examinations, homework, lab work, and the final exam. The grade scale used in this course is: 88.0% or higher = A 68.0% or higher = C Below 58.0% = F 78.0% or higher = B 58.0% or higher = D *note: These percentages are not rounded. For example, a grade of 87.9% is a B. Tests: During the semester at least 4 exams will be given. The exams will count 50% of the grade for the course. Labs grades: A grade will be given for each lab. Labs will be graded on attendance, participation, and a written lab report. These grades will count 15% of the final grade for the course. Daily grades: A grade will be given for each assignment. These grades will count 15% of the final grade for the course. All assigned work is due at the beginning of the next class day, unless otherwise noted. Assignments may be turned in using 2 different methods; turned in by hand, or scanned to .pdf file and emailed. No late assignments will be accepted. Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be administered at the end of the semester and will count 20% of the final semester grade for the course. The date and time of the final exam is TBA. Non-Discrimination Statement: Admission, employment, and program policies of Ranger College are non-discriminatory in regard to race, creed, color, sex, age, disability, and national origin. ABSENCE POLICY (From Ranger College General Catalog 2009-2010): “Regular and punctual attendance in all classes and labs is considered essential for optimum academic success. If the student has the equivalence of three weeks of unofficial absences in a course in which he/she is currently enrolled, the instructor may drop the student from the course with a grade of ―F’’. It is the responsibility of the instructor to keep an accurate and comprehensive record of attendance. Unofficial absences are counted from the first day of class as listed in the College Calendar, regardless of the date of the student’s registration. The only official absence is an authorized College activity, or an approved Leave of Absence. All work and/or assignments missed because of an official absence must be completed within two weeks or the official absence may count as unofficial. An official absence during the two-week period does not extend the deadline for the completion of assignments.” *note: All work assigned before any absence is due on the day the student returns from the absence. STUDENT ABSENCES ON RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS “Religious Holy Day – A holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under the Texas Tax Code 11.20 In accordance with the Texas Education Code 51.911, Ranger College will excuse a student from attending classes or other required activities, including examinations, for the observance of a religious holy day and travel for that purpose. A student whose absence is excused may not be penalized for that absence and will be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment from which the student is excused within a reasonable time after the absence. Policies and procedures for absences due to religious holy days will be consistent with the College’s policies and procedures related to other excused absences. (See Absence Policy in the RC Catalog) Physics 1402: General Physics II RANGER COLLEGE Spring 2012 Instructor: Melisa Lewis, MS Math E-mail: [email protected] Office hours: Available by appointment only, email correspondence is recommended. If a student and an instructor disagree about the nature of the absence being for the observance of a religious holy day as defined above, or if there is a similar disagreement about whether the student has been given a reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the President of the College or his/her designee. The student and the instructor shall abide by the decision of the President or his/her designee.” Tentative Calendar Schedule for Class: (Subject to Change) Thursday, 1/19 Simple Harmonic Motion Tuesday, 1/24 Energy transported by waves Thursday, 1/26 Characteristics of Sound Tuesday, 1/31 Interference and Doppler Effect Thursday, 2/2 Light and Geometric Optics Tuesday, 2/7 Exam 1: Ch11,12,23 Thursday, 2/9 Electric Charges Tuesday, 2/14 Electric Fields Thursday, 2/16 Electric Potential Tuesday, 2/21 Electrical Energy Thursday, 2/23 Electric Current Tuesday, 2/28 Power in Electric Circuits Thursday, 3/1 Exam 2: Ch16,17,18 Tuesday, 3/6 DC Circuits Thursday, 3/8 Resistance and Capacitance Tuesday, 3/20 Magnetism Thursday, 3/22 Electromagnetism Tuesday, 3/27 Exam 3: Ch19,20 Thursday, 3/29 Relativity Tuesday, 4/3 Mass and Energy Thursday, 4/5 The Atom Tuesday, 4/10 Intro to Quantum Theory Thursday, 4/12 Nuclear Physics Tuesday, 4/17 Radioactivity and Half-life Thursday, 4/19 Nuclear Energy Tuesday, 4/24 Nuclear Imaging Thursday, 4/26 Exam 4: Ch26,27,30,31 Tuesday, 5/1 Astronomy Thursday, 5/3 Review for final Date TBA Final Exam All items contained in this syllabus are subject to change as the semester progresses.
