Master’s Programme in Machine Learning and Data Mining Master’s Programme in Machine Learning and Data Mining Welcome to Macadamia! The Master’s Programme in Machine Learning and Data Mining gives students fundamental expertise in some of the hottest topics in IT and computational sciences. The two-year programme (120 credits) leads to a Master of Science with a major in computer and information science. It builds on the top research of two national centres of excellence, in machine learning and data mining, appointed by the Academy of Finland. Studies in Macadamia The programme covers two important fields in modern computer science, machine learning and data mining. They allow computer systems to adapt and to learn by observing the environment either with the help of sensors or by browsing large-scale databases. These methods are applicable to and necessary for a wide variety of fields. Recent key application areas include bioinformatics, ecology, natural language processing, and multimodal interfaces. In addition to basic theory and techniques of machine learning and data mining, and modules and courses on application areas, the programme covers e.g. computer vision, neuroinformatics and language technology. For example, the advanced study module (20 credits) concentrates on the analysis and modelling of signals and complex data sets, and on their practical applications. The programme offers also the possibility for a double degree with studies of at least one semester (30 credits) at a partner university. Aalto University is a core partner in the European Institute of Technology ICT Labs, which will create further international opportunities for students. Who should apply? Admission criteria for the Macadamia programme consist of a high-quality bachelor’s degree of a minimum of 180 credits in computer science or in a related field (e.g. in information technology, mathematics, physics, statistics or electrical engineering), or equivalent full-time studies of at least three years. Applicants should have a solid knowledge of mathematics, basic probability theory and statistics and basic skills in programming, algorithms and data structures. Additionally, an excellent command in English is required and applicants are expected to provide a certificate of an official language test (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE or CPE). Professor Erkki Oja Prem Raj Adhikari, Nepal Director of Macadamia Student (2008) Data mining and machine learning will be essential technologies in the computing environment. The degree obtained enables the graduates to enter the IT industry in Finland or anywhere in the world. It also allows students to continue seamlessly to doctoral studies. Optional double-degree studies are offered as well. For the best Macadamia students, we grant summer jobs, honours student positions and paid master’s thesis projects. There are a lot of advantages in studying in Finland. There are few universities and they are world-renowned in their fields. They focus on research, and students can learn about the latest developments in their fields on the well-designed courses. Also, the typical European standard of living and the Scandinavian model of social welfare, high quality of life and security are attractive to foreigners. Dept. of Information and Computer Science The department focuses on advanced computational methods for modelling, analysing, and solving complex tasks in technology and science. Our research develops fundamental methods for the analysis of large and high-dimensional data sets and for the modelling and design of complex computa- tional systems. The Department hosts two national Centres of Excellence: the Adaptive Informatics Research Centre and part of the Algorithmic Data Analysis Research Centre. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2009, the Department was ranked among the top two departments of Aalto University. Printed 2010 You get a new university which cuts across traditional academic disciplines and backgrounds, and which produces something that is truly unique and new. Established in 2010, Aalto University resulted from the merger of three of Finland’s top universities: The Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and The University of Art and Design Helsinki. The three schools of the Aalto University are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right, and bring centuries of experience to the new university.
