Geometry Vocabulary Study Guide
Geometry is a major topic that will be assessed during the NC EOG
Tests in 5th grade. It is very important that you understand the
vocabulary associated with geometry in order to be successful. The
following is a study guide for our first geometry quiz, which will be
given on Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Please study the following
terms and the examples we used in class so that you may be
successful. Ms. Gilchrist, math teacher

Point: an exact location in space
Line: a straight path of points that goes on forever in two directions
Plane: an endless flat surface
line segment: part of a line and has 2 endpoints
ray: part of a line; it has only one endpoint and extends forever in
one direction
6. parallel lines: lines that never cross and stay the same distance
apart
7. intersecting lines: lines that pass through the same point
8. perpendicular lines: intersecting lines that form square corners (90
degree angles)
9. angle: formed by two rays that have the same endpoint
10. vertex: the common endpoint of two rays joined together
11. protractor: tool used to measure and draw angles
12. degrees: what angles are measured in
13. acute angle: an angle with a measure between 0 and 90 degrees
14. right angle: an angle with a measure of 90 degrees
15. obtuse angle: an angle with a measure between 90 and 180
degrees
16. straight angle: an angle whose measure is 180 degrees
17. polygon: a closed plane figure made up of line segments
18. regular polygon: a polygon who has sides of equal length and
angles of equal measure
19. triangle: polygon with 3 sides
20. quadrilateral: polygon with 4 sides
21. pentagon: polygon with five sides
22. hexagon: polygon with six sides
23. octagon: polygon with eight sides
