Linking Verbs
A linking verb describes an occurrence or a state of mind. It connects parts of a sentence.
The most common linking verb is the verb
to be. Following are some other linking verbs.
appear
smell
grow
taste
seem
feel
stay
remain
become
sound
look
The supports looked fragile.
The actor seemed nervous when the play began.
It sounds like a fire alarm.
I became increasingly certain that he was lying.
The verbs on the list do not always function as linking verbs. To determine whether the word is functioning as a
linking verb or as an action verb, examine its role in the sentence.
Linking
The child grew tired by the end of the evening.
The milk smells sour.
The lemonade tastes too sweet.
Action
My mother grows the best tomatoes I have ever eaten.
Can you smell the roses?
Have you tasted the lemonade?
A predicate nominative (noun, pronoun, or adjective) follows a linking verb and describes or identifies the
subject.
My sister is a pediatrician.
The house is old.
I feel sick.
Is that you?
Since the linking verb serves as an “equals sign,” the words on both sides of it must be in the same case.
Case
Case is the form of a noun or pronoun that shows how it is used and how it relates to other words in a
sentence.
Three Cases in English
Nominative
Objective
Possessive
