SHYAMALA KUNJITHAPATHAM 133 Bullard Street, apt 1 New Bedford, Massachusetts 02746 (508)-994-5290 (R), (508)-910-6349 (W) Email: [email protected] OBJECTIVE: Seeking position as software Engineer in a good organization. EXPERIENCE: 08/00-08/01: Research Assistant, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Development of a World Wide Web-based laboratory for a class in computer systems performance evaluation: The goal of this project was to develop a distributed, easy to use, virtual– laboratory component that would enhance the quality of education that students get and could conduct experiments and actively learn the concepts of computer system performance evaluation away from the actual laboratory. The system was coded in Java and HTML. 08/01-Present: Research Assistant, Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Application of High-Resolution Satellite-Derived Sea Surface Temperature Data for Improved Management and Forecasting of Atlantic Mackerel, Scomber scombrus, Habitat and Predation Impact Off the East Coast of the United States: This project involves working with applying highresolution satellite-derived SST data to improve management and forecasting of Atlantic Mackerel using ArcGis and Matlab. 08/01-03/02: Thesis, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Development of an efficient method for processing remote-sensing satellite data: The objective was to develop an efficient method for processing remote-sensing satellite data using complex valued artificial neurons as an approach to the problems associated with specific tasks of computer vision region identification and classification - as they are applied to satellite data. EDUCATION: 09/00-05/02: MS in Computer Engineering at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. 11/95-08/99: Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering University of Mysore, India. COMPUTER SKILLS: Languages: C, C++, JAVA, Oracle, Matlab, HTML, Fortran Assembly Language: Microprocessor (8085) Operating systems: UNIX, DOS, Windows’NT and 95 Commercial Software: Microsoft Office, ArcGis RELEVANT COURSES: Computer organization Advanced computer networks Network application programming Database programming Operating systems Computer systems Performance evaluation Parallel and Distributed computing Microprocessors PROJECTS ACCOMPLISHED: 1) Development of a layered half-duplex communication software: This project involves the development of C code to support a half-duplex layered communication system. The objective is to implement layers 1, 1 2, 3 and 4 of the OSI system using some existing interface protocols. Part of this work involves the development of peer-to-peer protocols. 2) Development of audio streaming application with existing freeware on the Internet, to carry out real time audio streaming. The project also involved simulation of Internet traffic in different load conditions to carry out performance evaluation of the system and to conclude whether the current Internet supports the application. 3) Development of a TFTP server: The objective was to write a UDP based TFTP server. The server was able to handle read requests that use transfer mode “octet”. The focus of this project was UDP programming, including timeouts and retransmissions. The server works with standard TFTP clients. 4) Automatic network topology discovery in Java: The aim of the project is to obtain the topology of a network, get the Subnet masks etc, given the range of IP addresses of the network. 5) Development of a proxy HTTP server: The objective was to write a proxy HTTP server that was able to handle GET, HEAD, and POST requests sent by a client speaking HTTP version1.0 or 1.1. The proxy server worked with any HTTP client (browser), and was tested with a custom HTTP client written only for the test purpose. 6) Development of a World Wide Web-based laboratory for a class in computer systems performance evaluation: The goal of this project was to develop a distributed, easy to use, virtual–laboratory component that would enhance the quality of education that students get and could conduct experiments and actively learn the concepts of computer system performance evaluation away from the actual laboratory. The system was coded in Java and HTML. Operating system concepts like CPU scheduling, Page replacement, Disk scheduling were implemented. 7) Library database management system: Development of library database management system in Oracle, with the back end programming in PL/SQL and front end implemented in Java with JDBC for connectivity to the database. 8) Development of an efficient method for processing remote-sensing satellite data using complex valued neural networks: The objective was to develop an efficient method for processing remote-sensing satellite data using complex valued artificial neurons as an approach to the problems associated with specific tasks of computer vision - region identification and classification - as they are applied to satellite data. Regions like land, water, and urban roads were classified in Landsat TM image of the Boston region of New England. The system was coded in matlab. PUBLICATIONS: Processing Landsat TM data using complex-valued neural networks, H.E.Michel, S.Kunjithapatham, Aerosense 2002. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: American Geophysical Union (AGU). FIELDS OF INTEREST: Networking, Databases, Neural Networks, Computer operating systems. 2
