Patient Experience Program (PEP) Badge
You will receive a badge at Registration. The badge is used to
improve your experience at UVA Cancer Center. It helps:

UVA Cancer Center Support
Services team helps you and your
caregivers through your journey
with cancer.
Most services are located
on the 1st floor. A member of the
team may also meet with you in
the clinic. Most of the services
are free to patients and caregivers.

American Cancer Society Patient Navigator
In partnership with the American Cancer Society, UVA Cancer Center offers
free support from an ACS Patient Navigator. She helps cancer patients and
caregivers with the practical concerns of diagnosis and treatment.
Practical Concerns
-  Will I have a hard time getting to and from treatment?
-  Am I worried about paying medical bills?
-  Am I worried about paying for medications?
-  Do I need lodging information?
-  Do I want to connect with others in a community support group?
-  Do I need to know about hair loss resources?
-  Do I want to talk about how my diagnosis impacts my work?
-  As a caregiver, do I want to talk about how the diagnosis of my loved
one impacts my work?

Free Resources

•  Other reliable and relevant national organizations
Meet with the ACS Patient Navigator
•  During a clinic or treatment appointment
•  In a separate visit in the Support Services clinic
•  Over the phone
You do not need an appointment. It can be helpful to make an
appointment to make sure you have plenty of time to discuss
your concerns and problem solve together.
Social Workers
A cancer diagnosis can bring emotional and psychological
distress. Our Clinical Social Workers help with adjusting to the
illness, anxiety, and depression. They can help with difficult
family or social situations. They draw from your strengths to
find solutions, increase coping skills, and seek out resources.
Their services are free.
Services Include
•  Individual, family and group counseling and support
•  Advance Directive guidance and support. An Advance
Directive informs healthcare professionals of your wishes for
medical care in the event that you are unable to. Everyone
over the age of 18 should have an Advance Directive.

Nutrition Counseling
Good nutrition is an important part of your cancer treatment. It
can help reduce side effects and speed up your recovery. Our
dietitian offers free services that can help you with:

Weight gain or weight loss
Loss of appetite
Taste changes
Meal planning
Meeting with the dietitian as early as possible into treatment is
ideal. She can see you at your clinic or treatment visits or meet
one-on-one with you. Tell your healthcare provider you want to
meet with the dietitian or call to make an appointment.
Psychologist
Our Clinical Psychologists help you and your loved ones adjust
to cancer and cancer treatments. They can clinically assess and
treat:

Sexual difficulties
Other psychological disorders
They provide psychotherapy for individuals, groups, and/or

Spiritual Care and Guidance
The chaplain is available to help support you and your
caregiver during this stress-filled time. Her services are free
and include:

Helping you reflect on your own emotional or spiritual
concerns

Provide support whether you are part of a specific faith
tradition or not

Offer prayer

Simply sit and talk
Tobacco Treatment
This free service helps tobacco users address their addiction to
tobacco. Our tobacco treatment specialist can meet with you in
person or by phone to help you create a custom plan to quit.
She can help you address:

Palliative Care
Palliative Care is a special team approach to managing
symptoms such as:

Fatigue
Emotional stress
Palliative care eases suffering for patients and caregivers. The
goal is for you to have the highest quality of life possible. Your
doctor can refer you to our Palliative Care clinic. There is a copay required for this service.
Caregivers: A Community of Support
Family and caregivers play an important role in a patient’s cancer
journey. Caregivers can be spouses, children, family members,
friends, and others.
Counseling and educational materials are available to provide support
to stay emotionally strong and healthy.
Caregiver Café – Session for caregivers held twice each month.
Caregivers can stop by to get free support and educational materials.
Our social workers can provide resources for your children, or help
you to talk to your children/teens about cancer.
