Cancer is a disease in which the regular way that the body repairs breaks down, thus causing damaged cells to divide rapidly and uncontrollably. (cont.) • The cancer cells can then travel to other parts of the body and can eventually form new tumors Cancer Animations-See Animation 1 Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Effects of Cancer • Cancer cells tear through and crush neighboring tissues, strangle blood vessels, and take wholesome nutrients from healthy cells Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer What Causes Cancer? • Cancer can be caused by controllable and uncontrollable risk factors • In most cases cancer is caused by a carcinogen Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer What is a Carcinogen? • A carcinogen is any substance, or radioactive product that can cause cancer • Surprisingly, all humans are exposed to carcinogens in our daily lives, although many cancer-causing carcinogens can be avoided Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Examples of Carcinogens • Oncoviruses, viruses that can potentially cause cancer. • Radioactivity and Ultraviolet Rays • Chemicals that can be found in tobacco smoke. • These are only some examples of possible carcinogens. Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Examples of Types of Cancers • Breast Cancer -Cancer of the breast tissue; mostly found in women but 1% of cases can be found in men. -About 31% of people diagnosed with breast cancer die of it. Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Examples of Types of Cancers(cont.) • Prostate Cancer -Cancer of the male reproductive system. -About 15% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer die of it. Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Diagnosing and Treating Cancer • Cancer is detected and treated in many • ways, of course depending on the cancer in question Some may only require regular checkups, while others may require surgery, or chemotherapy Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Living with Cancer • Cancer victims often feel sluggish or weak • In children, they can feel upset and apprehensive about unsettling surroundings Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Five Steps to Protect Yourself • Don’t smoke or quit smoking • Protect your skin(sunscreen) • Eat nutritously • Stay active and keep in shape(round isn’t a shape) • Get regular medical checkups Lifetime Health Chapter 14: Section 3 Cancer Thank You
