L.E.Q. How do you find the surface areas of
prisms and cylinders?


A prism is a polyhedron with exactly two
congruent, parallel faces, called bases.
You name a prism by the shape of the bases.




The Bases – 2 congruent parallel faces.
Lateral Faces – all the faces between the
bases.
An Altitude – a perpendicular segment that
joins the planes of the bases.
Height (h) – the length of an altitude.

Use a net to find the surface area of the prism
below.


The lateral area of a right prism is the
product of the perimeter of the base and the
height.
The surface area of a right prism is the sum
of the lateral area and the areas of the two
bases.

Use formulas to find the lateral area and
surface area of the prism.

Consists of the height and the circumference
of the bases.

The sum of the lateral area and the areas of
the two circular bases.


The lateral area of a right cylinder is the
product of the circumference of the base and
the height of the cylinder.
The surface area of a right cylinder is the sum
of the lateral area and the areas of the two
bases.

The radius of the base of a cylinder is 4 in.
and its height is 6 in. Find the surface area of
the cylinder in terms of pi.

The drum of a steamroller is a cylinder of length 5.5
ft. The diameter of the drum is 4.2 ft. What area
does the drum cover in one full turn? Round your
answer to the nearest square foot.
