About Description of the Video: This video illustrates how math is used to save lives. When responding to an emergency, fire departments will track their response times to allow emergency services planners to calculate measures of central tendency to expose where and how to improve service. Description of the Video Interactive: In this video interactive, you will explore and predict the change in the mean and median as new emergency response times are introduced. Curriculum Connections: Please note all of the following correlations match outcomes in the new Mathematics Kindergarten to Grade 9 Program of Studies (2007). Grade 7 Statistics and Probability SO1: Demonstrate an understanding of central tendency and range by: • determining the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and range • determining the most appropriate measures of central tendency to report findings. Grade 7 Statistics and Probability SO2: Determine the effect on the mean, median and mode when an outlier is included in a data set.
